I'm a bit new to caravanning, but I've spent a bit of time over there recently staying near family, so I thought people might appreciate a couple of pointers.
Firstly, if you get the ferry from Cairnryan to Belfast, caravans are free on Tuesdays to Thursdays, so if the dates work for you, it can be half the price you expect. We have a dog and she stays in the car during the crossing. Some ferries have kennels that you can book for free, but I think most dogs are likely to be less stressed in a familiar environment.
There are 2 sites near Belfast that I have been to - the first is at Jordanstown Loughshore Park. You can book this on line for 3 nights and extend the stay to 6 nights by making a phonecall. There is easy access to Belfast for stuff like the Titanic exhibition or just the Craic. The site is behind PIN controlled gates and it's part of a seashore park facility with plenty of room for dogs to run about and a cafe for sandwiches/rolls/coffee/ice cream. The loos are clean and warm and there is free WiFi access - https://antrimandnewtownabbey.campstead.com/Jordanstown-Loughshore-Park/CheckAvailability.asp Every pitch has water, electricity and TV.
Then, there is the site at Carnfunnock Country Park, just north of Larne. In this case, I recommend that you do follow satnav to get there because you don't want to tow through the middle of Larne and out the Coast Road, just because the (short) tunnel is on a corner and the bypass route is less hassle. You need to check in at the visitor centre and get an access token before you get to the actual site. The site is clean and tidy, it has a warm and dry toilet block and every pitch has water, electricity, TV and waste disposal. The sausage soda sandwiches aren't quite as good at the cafe as the ones at Jordanstown, but it's still a great place with friendly service. One big advantage, though, there are dog-friendly trails to explore, not just a park - this is somewhere that the locals bring their dogs to walk of a morning too, so there is plenty of opportunity to shoot the breeze with fellow dog owners. - http://www.carnfunnock.co.uk/ |
