Well, it seems the issue is now intermittent. Im trying to work out where (and if) there is a specific event that triggers it... The other day, we went out on a good run, no problems at all, idling great, pulling up great etc. I got home and dropped my missus and daughter off (didn't switch engine off) reversed and pulled away and it started idling like it was pulsing again and perhaps a tad down on power... To me it is either electrical issue or i have an intermittent air leak or perhaps porous pipes somewhere. I will have to replace all the pipes with some nylon type piping and inspect the tank...

The longer this goes on, and having read a number of threads about this on POCUK from over the years, and speaking to Charlieannear (a POCUK member) who had and still has the same issue from many years ago, the more im realising that the choice available is to live with it as many have done for years or to throw a bucket of cash at this mysterious EDC setup and potentially get nowhere. I will always be looking for it mind, but having the pump overhauled and things like that im not really prepared to do if i cannot get a definitive yes or no on whether it is the offending problem. The problem with diagnosis seems to be a lack of available software. i have been in contact with a few people locally who say there is specialist software and i'll be lucky if even Mitsubishi in the UK have it... This seems to be the case. I know of a past member on this forum who had a carman kit, super duper expensive kit, that worked but again, im not prepared to buy one and im currently trying to source someone local(ish) who may have one specifically that will communicate with the car.

So that is where i am currently. My gut feeling is there is some solenoid or sensor on the pump (mine is connected via throttle cable very early EDC type) that is failing/intermittent. But again im reluctant to rip it off to have it overhauled without know with absolutely certainty as to make the most economic sense with my finances...

I think you are correct about dealers not having the software as the EDC pump was not fitted to Shoguns (I thnk) - and many dealers don't seem to want to work on imported Pajeros.

JimmyBond had a Carman but he was kicked off here - and I have lost his email address.

Maybe you could start a new thread with the title "Anyone got a Carman" and see if anyone replies.

Not a bad idea Paul. Hi Simon, That was the chap i noticed in the old threads about the carman. Im in Staffordshire, a good 150 miles away from Bury St Edmunds.  Crying or Very sad Id have to cross paths with the chap really. I'll PM you though. You never know...

I also have a 1997  fly by wire which does pretty much the same as yours. Idles fine one minute then a pig the next.

Ive wondered is this electrical because its intermittent .

Read lots of threads on this fault and no one has solved it yet.

Did read a  post where an alternator which produces an AC current which converts it to DC but sometimes the diode fails and sends to much AC current which will start the electronics to play up.

If mine is going to play up its always on idle when cold ( I leave mine to  tick over for atleast 3-4 mins) Which does improve the idling on my drive to work. But its not always connected to a cold engine as i can do a long run for an hour down the motorway and come to a stop at a junction and it starts again. when it gets on my nerves i put it in neutral which stops the bad idling straight away.

Im living with it for the moment but would love to get it sorted.

Can anyone explain what an idle re learn is?

My A/C has been broken since ive owned the pajero bout 6 mths and god knows how long before that. Took it to a friends garage yesterday who checked it and he said its empty
of gas so he put nitrogen i think  in it first to check for a leak. It held the pressure so he drained it off then put some oil and other additives in it. Then he left it to rest for 20 mins then re-gassed it. And then hey presto the air con was working .....  Like sitting in a freezer it was just hope it lasts for the summer.

A rising oil level certainly points to a defective pump seal and yes edc pumps suffer the same symptoms as mechanical pumps do, keep your eye on it and see if it rises more....

My findings by purely observing the Air conditioner  on how the pajero idles.

I have only noticed this recently since i fixed the air con.(re-gas)


Running the pajero with air con off ( Runs rough when cold and Intermittent idling rough when warm)

Running the pajero with air con on @ 17 degrees ( Runs rough when cold and Intermittent idling rough when warm)

Running the pajero with air con on @ 24 degrees ( Starts up and idles a solid  900  rpm and when up to temperature drops back to 750 rpm and idles fine)

I have only noticed this as the garage who gassed my air con  asked if it was still working and i said i dont really know as im not using it . They told me to use it even
to heat the inside of the car to keep the a/c active. So i have been doing this and noticed the idle problem has  disappeared for now.

Im posting this as a new avenue to be looking at to try and solve this annoying idling issue  so many of us have to live with.


I believe whatever is controlling the idle and decides how to compensate the load on the engine by increasing the revs is faulty. Any suggestions on what controls the load
on the engine idling management etc???????

Not sure what vehicle/engine combo you've got, but at least on the mechanical pump 2.8 (and probably 2.5) engines there are three idle adjustments:

Hot idle
Cold idle
Idle-up (when aircon compressor cuts in)

The L-shaped rod below is the air-con idle-up mechanism, which is actuated by a vacuum solenoid that is switched with the air con compressor:



If you have a good look at your injection pump accelerator mechanism, you will see the various stops that control the idle speed at different conditions. If you need more guidance, search for 'idle adjustment' in the search box.

following this with interest as my new to me 2/3 weeks ago 2.8 '96 (P reg) has exactly same symtems starts fine is worse does it more when motor is cold but even when warm/properly warmed up come to a stop or just creeping and it starts to hunt just a few secs its as if its about to stall but doesnt i tend to knock it into N as i come to a stop and it doesnt hunt, i thought it might of just been tickover too low when you put it in gear (Auto box) which pulls tickover down a touch, also thinking might be an injector but as you say just the mearest touch of gas and it sorts itself out and the damn thing flys like a missile and not a hint of missfire/hunting once above normal tickover speed much much quicker than me other 2.8TD,s iv had.

I have searched and searched to find a solution to this very common problem among the 140bhp models.

you read a post and think this seems promising then the topic goes cold as they have given up trying to fix it.

It has to be something simple as its never always present the fault that is.

What i noticed the other day whilst changing a jubilee clip on a heater hose that one of my injectors was wet around the base of it and the others were dry.

I will check this again shortly to see if its still wet .

I have also extended my search to the Delica site which they same thing is happening on them too.

Still no luck finding a solution yet though as theres only so many posts i can read before i give up for the night.
