Just come back from a 45 minutes run with no problems. So where does that leave me? Go with the flow I reckon. Just one electrical issue and that is the dash board lights still dim when I put on the side lights?

Glad you're getting there.
Lights dimming when others are on normally points to a problem with earthing. Digital multimeters are really cheap, and pay for themselves very quickly. |

Sadly no. The issue still persists obviously the new alternator has stopped the flat battery issue. As the vehicle gets warmer the hunting is not as pronounced but is not cured. I am going to have to take it into a diesel specialist to get it checked over.
I thought I had found the cause. |

Thought someone may have finally sorted this out when you both stopped posting about it. mine has spells when it stops doing it but at the moment its quite bad. the only thing I have always noticed is if I put it out of drive the stutter and smoke stop. I will put it up on ramp next and get to wiring on top of auto box , give it all a clean up, tried everything else |

Your vehicle shows exactly the same symptoms as mine or should I say very similar symptoms. On initial startup it hunts and expels black smoke when it stutters. As it warms up this stops but the stuttering starts again when it is in any gear but usually not whilst it is in P or N.

Used the Mitzy today and after it had warmed up well I have had no problems. Curiouser and curiouser cried Alice. But I am sure that as soon as it is started next time it will have the same initial problem of stutter and f+rt.

Mine ran faultless for a good few weeks but it has returned whilst using the aircon in the warm weather we been having.
After changing my alternator I now get 40 more miles on a tank of fuel
Done another idle relearn to reset the idle which worked fine but mrs turned the aircon on again and its playing up again grrrrrrrrrr.
Will now need to look into whats causing this whilst using the aircon. Gotta love these old pajero.
I have read by disconnecting the batteries puts the ecu into a base map whilst its gathering data from the vehicle before setting itself up. Unfortunately its only going to give you
temporary good idling . Once its gathered the information from the sensors etc its going to start acting up again.
So what ever you try doing to resolve it dont forget to relearn the idle.
I challenged this theory by disconnecting the batteries for a few hours then started it and drove it straight away and it was running like a pig. Dissconected batteries again and did idle relearn and it ticked over fine.
Does anyone have a Mitsubishi manual link for information on the engine sensors?
Thanks

Well I disconnected battery last night , on reconnection today it spluttered for a second and threw out the smoke after that its now running perfect again. didn,t even do the idle relearn. Its driving better and doesn't sound like its exhaust is blowing when driving in enclosed areas. To me it has to be a sensor giving duff info to ecu if it were injectors or the like the fault would be there full time. Not expecting it to be fixed but at least I don't feel like kicking it when I get out at moment. |

We have one at the moment doing some hunting while cold, when warm and returning to idle the rev dips and returns to normal. I have a feeling it’s in the pump the problem is, it’s like it don’t know where idle is or having difficulty maintaining it.
I have bought another edc pump and changing it out on Saturday, if it eliminates the problem it’s pump, if not it’s something else. Either way it’s only a couple of hours work and some elimination will be made. |

Got to admit when you pull the accelerator inside the cabin and increase the revs slightly the problem nearly stops.

Our one does that too, the idle can be adjusted via the electrical idle switch. The switch with single wire going to it. |

My thoughts are that if it were something mechanical such as pump or injectors etc fault would not just go away by disconnecting the battery. Mine is now running perfectly again so it has to be something giving ECU info causing over fueling or something similar. I will see how long it lasts this time. It would be interesting to see if a data logger could be added to collect info ECU is collecting continuously and see if anything could be spotted that way. |

Anyone got a part number for an ECU to fit a 96 Pajero 2.8td SWB (4M 40 engine) vehicle? I might keep my eyes peeled for a future replacement.
