Just changed my ATF so I thought I would do some pics because there have been some people asking lately about how to do it.
1 Remove the bash plates and find the two pipes that go from near the engine.
2. Release the hose clip nearest the engine (green arrow) on the pipe marked with the yellow arrow.
Fit a long length of 3/8 inch rubber pipe onto the metal pipe you have just taken the ATF pipe off and place the other end in a bucket
3. Start the engine and leave it ticking over for a MAXIMUM of 60 seconds - or until the ATF starts to splutter out of the end of the pipe. Mine started spluttering after 40 seconds.
I only ever get approximately 4.5L out even though some people get more.
4. Remove the sump plug from the gearbox and drain the rest of the ATF.
5. Replace the sump plug and the ATF pipe.
6. Measure the total amount of ATF that came out and replace with the same amount of new ATF - I use Millermatic ATF SPIII WS.
7. Cycle through all the selector positions, holding in each position for 10 seconds and then check the ATF level on the dipstick (with engine running).
8. Go for a drive to heat up the gearbox to normal temperature and cycle through the selector positions again and check the level with engine running - top up if necessary.
My old ATF was 2 years old.
and it doesn't look any different to the new stuff
but it has been in there for 2 years which is as long as I like to leave any oil in my truck. |

Thanks Pete. I've often wondered which hose should be removed, but I am sure that you've now made it clear.
Also a good idea to use a long drain hose so that it's a single-handed job. |

Nice pete, perhaps many questions often asked will now be answered.
Should be made a sticky for the 2.8. |

Excellent guide Pete. Just about to change the ATF after my various coolant upgrades with the snag being the new radiator having different threads on the oil cooler fittings. Anyway, managed to find adapters and sort that out but the Paj is the first auto I've owned and my question was does the ATF drain back into the sump when the engine is off? Having disconnected ATF lines a few times lately I'm sure there was about 1L drained out when very first disconnected, since then I've topped up the ATF by the book and yesterday when I disconnected the ATF cooler lines only a few ml trickled out so that's why I was concerned and wondering if you can get air trapped in the ATF cooler or any other part of the system? |

Through the dipstick tube on mine so it is probably the same on your later model. |

Through the dipstick unfortunately.
Did mine the other week and the stuff that came out was black. I ended up running an extra can of ATF through until I got clean fluid again. Silky smooth since then. |

Dipstick, add slowly with funnel and rag and as described here the method is to get the ATF up to temp then shift through all gears and take a reading with the engine running. |

I made an adapter on the lathe and this is bolted inside the bottle cap, these are often the same on 1L and 5L containers, it has a butyl pipe connected to it which just fits inside the dipstick tube.
I put this cap onto my 5L container and sit it on the battery and let it run in. |
