Hi Simon

Fuel economy has nothing to do with emissions, only fuel combustion has a direct relationship.

Hi Assssin

Fuel economy is a ratio of the distance covered per unit of fuel consumed, and that's what I was using as the basis for comparison. Fuel combustion is the term used for the exothermic chemical reaction between the fuel and oxygen. It's not quantified and isn't a measure of efficiency.

When I referred to 'emissions', I was including CO2 for which there is a linear relationship between emissions (g/km) and fuel economy (mpg).  For other emissions, there may be no linear relationship between fuel economy and emissions.  However there's a very strong correlation.

Here's an example.  Unfortunately I can't find emissions data for my 2.8 Challenger, so have instead taken a 3.2 Shogun of similar vintage to my Mercedes E320CDI.

In real world driving, the Shogun uses 38.2% more fuel and produces 38.2% more CO2 than the Mercedes E320 CDI. It also produces 44.3% more NOx and particulate matter.

Given that my Challenger has older diesel technology than the 3.2 Shogun and gets few miles per gallon, it's certain to produce more than 44% more NOx and PMs than my Mercedes.

Of course I agree with you that weight and aerodynamics make the Shogun much less economical with fuel. They also make it produce more emissions.
