Hi All, 🌞 fantastic working on truck weather.
My son has an old 1997 2.8 auto shogun we are prepping for a long drive and camping trip in Europe. There are a few jobs and niggles he needs garage input for (as it's a five hour drive to get to my place each time as I'm North Yorkshire) so does anyone know of a garage Stroud/Gloucester way that has a modicum of common sense, practical ability, diagnostic brain without having to use a computer and not bodger or rip off merchant? A lot to ask but ever hopeful 🤗👍. Thanks.

PS, sorry in advance if I have insulted you as you 'are that' garage and you are on this forum. (Great forum by the way has been of immeasurably useful help while working on his truck.)  salute  wav

Still looking. Could I increase the area to Swindon, Cheltenham etc? Desperately trying to find a garage that knows these older vehicles. Tried an auto transmission specialist in Gloucestershire and just wanted a mechanic tomhave a quick listen and advise 'yes probably auto box' or 'no, don't think it is' but couldn't get passed reception insisting they only do a diagnostic for £75. Kin el this is frustrating. Just want 'someone' who knows their way around  a 20 year old Shogun.

Would your son consider doing the maintenance himself?  Paying garage rates for a 20-year old vehicle doesn't make economic sense. Also he'll never really know if the work has been done properly or indeed if some of it was necessary in the first place.

If he's in a position to do so, my recommendation would be for your son to attack a few simple jobs first and then progress. There's a massive archive on here that can be searched, plus 'live' advice from members if needed.

I hadn't done any car maintenance at all until I got my Challenger five years ago. Now I don't let anybody else near it with a spanner unless I really have to.

Thanks Simon for reply. He does most of his own maintenance and comes up here (NY) for long weekends when we get the bigger jobs done. Unfortunately he works seriously long hours and doesn't get much time or have the facility to do all the stuff himself. The big prob we have at the mo is a possible auto box/engine prob and he just needs someone with a brain and not a computer to have a quick listen.
There are also the odd job he just doesn't have the time for that would need a garage input.
So ever hopeful there is such a beast somewhere  Very Happy

Understood.  There a so few decent garages around now. Most of the old school mechanics have retired, and people with their skills are thin on the ground. I hope that you manage find somewhere locally to your son.

Even if you do find somewhere, often auto gearboxes are things that garages won't touch. If you could distinguish between a possible engine or gearbox fault, you could go to an autobox specialist if appropriate. If you want any assistance from the forum with identifying the issue, just ask.

Thanks Simon. This is exactly what we are trying to establish at the mo. Box or engine. It has this horrendous drumming at idle, makes your eyeballs rattle. Does it in all selections, slightly less in drive and very occasionally not at all. Goes when revs increase but son thinks it is very slightly noticeable when driving. When you slow down it comes in as you slow and engine speed drops to idle. Nightmare.

Do you have the means to raise up the car so you can get underneath it and try and isolate where the noise is coming from? You've got an advantage in that it's at idle and when at speed!

I had a very similar problem on my Merc last year. A really terrible clattering at idle only, that went as soon as the car was moving above walking pace. I thought the gearbox was about to fail.  I got underneath and found that someone else (garage!) had forgotten to tighten some of the exhaust mounting bolts.

If your noise isn't really affected by the position of the gear lever, that tends to rule out anything inside the gearbox related. I'd be looking at engine/gearbox/exhaust mounts.
