The fuel filler pipework running inside the rear offside wheel arch is 'protected' by a plastic cover secured with the number of plastic fixings.

It is not a close fit and collects mud. The result of this on our M3 Shogun was rusty fuel filler pipes, fuel tank corrosion and a very expensive injector pump overhaul.

Out of interest I removed the plastic cover on our 2015, 16k mile Shogun - the pipework is packed with mud. Steam cleaning this reveals some paint already lost.

We do live in a rural area so perhaps gather a bit more than most, but this pipework is worthy of addition corrosion protection - before the rust begins.

You can replace the smaller (15mm) pipes with copper heating pipe as they go into rubber, but protecting them is a good thing, you can replace them with stainless steel also but this is expensive, I used offcuts from work to make mine.

Thankyou, I checked mine this week and as you say, it was packed with mud. Cleaned and coated with ACF50. Looks like a regular maintenance check is required here.

Mines a MkII so I don't have this problem but have you thought of using Denso Tape HERE.

I have been using it for years to protect buried pipework.

Lots for sale on ebay HERE

That looks like a good solution Pete, certainly consider using it on new pipe.
As mine is showing signs of surface rust I think I will leave it open (under the guard still) but coated with ACF, should keep it at bay but makes it super easy to visually check. I have some XCP on order so may use that as it is apparently more resistant to coming off.

Every summer I flush both my MK III and MK IIII, to do this I have made a modified end for my hose using a scrap offcut turned down in the lathe and bored and soldered some copper brake pipe into, this had the end flattened slightly and is bent so it can fit right into the large gaps around the plastic and it flushes everything out.
