|
|
I have just attempted to change the rear brake pads and one of the slider pins had seized and snapped just below the thread, ok no big deal I can drill the stud out or worst case get a new caliper slider. What i would like to know is why are the top slider pins different to the bottom pins? The near side pins were the wrong way round, the one with the bit of rubber on the end came out of the upper slider.
Also when I put the pins back in would it be ok to put some copper grease on them? |

Has it snapped on the hex side and left the slide bit with thread in the caliper, or is it stuck in the frame part?
If the former, can you get a stilson on the pin and some heat and try that. |

Never put copper grease on brake slider pins! Back of the pads yes, pins nooooooooo.
Its an anti seize agent not a lubricant and will go gooey and start to set, hence the sliders will not slide and the calipers will seize. |

You can drill them out but it requires doing carefully as get the drill off centre and you'll end up with a nasty oval hole that does not locate the pin properly. When I had one to do I set it up on my mill and used a large end mill to find the centre off the casting before using a smaller slot mill to bore the remains of the pin out. |

It snapped off with about 8mm left, I did try the stilsons but that snapped flush with the case so went for the drill out and did well got it center, just short now of a 9mm hss drill bit for the final reem.
Thanks for the advice on the copper grease. |

Use silicone grease, and while you are there lift the boots on the caliper pistons and inject some into the boot and massage it around as the piston requires lubrication, be careful as the boots can be delicate |

Bang what assassins telling you. Get some sand paper or like roll it up and sand down any rust build up in the holes were the sliders go.
Big Redd sell caliper kits if you damage any of the rubbers. I never put the small rubber grommet on the bottom sliding pin as they only seem to *beeb* up and work fine without them. Just cake all moving parts in silicone grease. |

Yes they are the pins that seem to seize up, whats the point of them? The one that I freed off and cleaned up, when I put it back together that rubber seal on the end appeared to create a seal and when you pushed the pin in the air presure inside pushed it back out, is that the idea so that it pushes the pad off the disc when you release the brake pedal? |

I use this grease
Here
And for painting calipers I use This because it doesn't need to be cured by heating like most caliper paints. |

I couldn't find any grease like that locally either.
If you have any poly bushes in your suspension then the grease in that link is good to use on them as well - stops them squeaking! |
