Hi all,

It's been a couple of years since I had my last Pajero. I had time with a van (business use) and now a Nissan terrano. God damn thats an awful car, rusts way quicker than any Land Rover I have ever had. Not bad off road though, I will give it that.

Well thats going soon and having weighed up the options (LR, 4x4 etc) I have decided on a Mits again. I think this time I will be going for the sport, always liked the look of them plus I think it will suit my purpose. Kids are off to uni this weekend so with more free time to ourselves (me, the boss/wife) we are planning to do a lot more traveling so wanting something to turn into an overland type vehicle rather than an out and out off road thing. Thats the plan anyway.

With that in mind, are the sports good vehicles.? Do they have an LSD in the rear axle.? Do they have head gasket problems.? Is the 4x4 system the same as a paj/shogun.? Any advice about these vehicles would be great.

Hi - welcome back.

Can't help much about the Sport - except that I don't think they have SuperSelect so no 4WD on solid surfaces.

cheers Pete. I'm looking forward to trying one. I love the 4x4 system on the pajero so will be interesting to see the difference

That's correct Hutchy. I think it's only the 'imported' Challengers that have Super Select (ie same transmission as Mk2 Pajero Shogun).  The Shogun Sport (which confusingly was originally sold in the UK as a Challenger) doesn't have Super Select. So it's 4WD on loose surfaces only, exactly like the Mk1 Pajero/Shogun.

The imported diesel Challengers have the 2.8 4M40 engine, whereas UK supplied vehicles have the 2.5 4D56.   I don't think UK vehicles have LSD diffs, but some imports do.

If you want petrol, the UK vehicles are 3.0 litre and many of the imports are 3.5 litre.

I use my Challenger as an everyday vehicle and also for long distance touring. For the latter I've added quite a lot of sound deadening material, a mount for a tablet, and cruise control. One of the useful things if you're travelling two-up is that the rear seats backs fold completely flat and the seat bases can be removed easily. Perfect if you're thinking of putting a sleeping platform with storage under in the back.

thanks for the info Simon. Pity they don't have the same 4x4 as the pajero but as it won't be used for hard off road (if that makes sense) its not such a big issue.   

The seats that fold flat are very interesting, it would make it so much easier to kit out. Now I just need to find someone local so I can have a look at one  Very Happy

I think it will definitely be a diesel, it is available in many more places than lpg would and I wouldn't want the expense of running one on just petrol.
