Hi all
I bought about a year ago a 99 reg 3.2 pajero with close to 400000 kms on the clock only bought it with that many miles as I no the history of the 4x4 the engine was serviced every 6000 km by a freind of mine (I intend to do the same) and had the top guide and chain replaced abot 100000kms ago the engine is perfect in every way still plenty of power well able to pull etc and hardly blackens the oil from 1 service to the next. The one problem I have and my freind before me is that at idle the engine smokes alot at idle I think its getting progressivley worse too its a sort of blue white colour and smells like a very rich diesel smell its that bad that I turn off the engine when im hooking up the trailer as Id be poisened if not also if its left ticking over for a long period the engine managment light comes on could someone please suggest what this could be.
Thanks very much |

The colour and smell are indicative of unburned fuel passing into the exhaust system.
There could be a number of reasons, and I'm sure someone will be along soon to give you a better idea:
Poor compression.
Blocked or faulty fuel injector causing un-even diesel spray.
Poor airflow into the system - Blocked pipes, blocked air filter, gunge in the inlet manifold
EGR problems, not closing properly.
If it's serious enough you may get some fault codes recorded in the system
Regards,
Stephen |

As a quick check, have a look at the air filter/intake. Look for blockages. |

I was wondering about the same for my Mk IV regarding injectors.
I dropped Diesel Bob (use google to find his website) and he said my Mk IV injectors couldn't be re-conditioned. I assume that would be the same for yours as well, but I would check with him. |
