Hi I’m new to the forum so I’m sorry if this has been covered before ,
Right ... I bought a 1996 shogun swb 2.5tdi 4d56 engine as a non runner. Previous owner said it cut out while driving and wouldn’t restart
Found the fuel pump to be knackered so replaced with a 2nd hand unit, the shogun now runs but is very smokey it is grey smoke and I think it’s over fueling I’m pretty sure the timing is correct, I’m still in touch with the previous owner and he swears it was not smokey before he seemed genuine
Any ideas are welcome 🙏 thanks in advance

Blue smoke is un-burned diesel, so I suggest you check the pump and cam timing to be certain, one tooth out is too much. Also check/set the valve clearances. Whilst checking the valve clearances, feel the cam follower rollers for excess slack as these do wear.

Thanks for your reply
Smoke is grey not blue smells like unburnt fuel
Timing has been checked 3 times and I’m sure it’s right I will check the followers tomorrow
