Just bought a 1990 mk1 and the clutch has very little left on it is say, she grinds going in to 2nd and the pedal is near the floor.  Is there any adjustment possible to buy some time or am Iooking at replacement. What is the likely cost, could I do it myself???

Check the pedal free play is not excessive. Gently depress the clutch pedal by hand, until slack between the master cylinder and clutch pedal is between 8-16 mm. Refer to the Haynes Repair Manual for details.

If you are an experienced mechanical person, and strong, with tools and the appropriate jacks, you may be able to do this clutch replacement yourself, but the gearbox is really heavy plus the transfer case stays on the end of the box, adding to both weight and length. This box is heavy and awkward enough to cause really serious injury. I wouldn't even try it on my own. Use the above Manual for direction.
