I understand the need for different tooth counts on the drive gear for my Mk2 Paj. The knackered one I removed had 28 teeth. I can get a replacement with 26 teeth. According to the mounting marks on the gear housing a 26 and 28 tooth gear mount in the same position, relative to the transfer cover.  If I use the 26 tooth gear how much difference, if any, will that make?

I am happy to be corrected, but I think that the 26 tooth drive will rotate at 28/26 of the speed of the 28 tooth one.  This is 1.0769.

So if your speedo was showing 60mph, it will now show 60 x 1.0769 = 64.614 mph

Hi Simon, thanks for the reply. That makes sense to me. So assuming the teeth remain the same size (because they need to mesh with the output shaft) the wheel diameter changes with the tooth count, more teeth wider gear? I think a light just came on  Rolling Eyes

That was my thinking too.

Now you need to treat yourself to a nice set of bigger tyres to bring the speedo accuracy back.  Laughing
