[b][b][b][b][b][u][i][u][u][b]Many people get confused about their alarm systems and in this article we will look at the specifics of the Mark III systems and how to deal with the regular issues they suffer, and we will be dealing with right hand drive vehicles for locations of the alarm unit.
If you have your original vehicle handbook it should contain a set of alarm user instructions as a separate sheet and on the front it will state the model, earlier models were marked as Diamond Collection Optimum HF3 and later models were marked Elite 4.

[size=24]Optimum HF3 systems are the Cobra 8165 unit.

Elite 4 systems are the Cobra 8185 unit.

You should also have a little sheet containing two numbers, the first will be the serial number marked as S/N 01234567 which is the 8 digit serial number and the second number is marked as PIN CODE = 0123.

When the vehicle was new it came with two alarm fobs and two touch keys but as these vehicles get older the alarm fobs were often inoperable, lost, or simply not given to new owners, and you can code up to 4 of these to the system in any order. From new you got all four coded and the system was full, but you can code one touch key and 3 alarm fobs if you like.

If you don’t have this information then you need it, to get this you need to find the alarm unit which is located behind the vehicles side panel on the right hand side of the accelerator pedal, remove this panel and the alarm unit will be visible. Look for a four digit number and this will be either 8165 OR 8185 and this is the model number, there should also be the markings S/N and an 8 digit number and this is the serial number, you need both of these numbers. No pin code is listed on the unit for security reasons, only the model number and serial number so record them and keep them safe and not in the vehicle.
You can E-mail both these numbers to Cobra Car Tech and they will send you the pin number back as you need the pin number for several reasons.

Changing The Battery

Normally; when your alarm fob fails to work it is the battery and this is a CR 2032 which is a standard 3 volt battery, this can be identified simply by pressing the large button on your key fob and looking at the red LED between the buttons. If this fails to illuminate or flashes intermittently then it is your battery; in some cases the little microswitch beneath the large key fob button can fail and it you wiggle it sideways the LED will begin flashing and unlock/lock your vehicle.
Replacing your battery is simple, the key fob is a two piece unit and if it still has the attachment strap to connect it to the keyring then start prising the case apart here, if it doesn’t have this then start prising it apart where it should attach and work your way around the fob carefully until it is prised apart. Inside you will see a circular disc containing the electronic circuit and this can either be lifted out; or it can remain in the bottom half of the casing.
Push the battery out noting its polarity, the + side of the battery should be facing upwards, leave the key fob for at least 30 seconds to discharge its circuits and then insert the new battery with the + marked side facing upwards. Replace the top of the case and snap it shut, the key fob will require synchronising to the vehicle.

Under some circumstances the key fob may lose its synchronisation and this is often due to heavy electronic interference.

Synchronising the Key Fob

Synchronising the key fob is a very easy process and is done very simply, stand at the side of the vehicle next to its front windows and aim the key fob towards the interior lights just behind the windscreen. Push both buttons down together and hold them down and watch the LED between the buttons, after about 10 seconds the LED will stop flashing and extinguish , let go of the buttons and the LED will illuminate; and simply push the right hand button (largest button) and the LED will go out, the fob is now synchronised to the vehicle.

Note: if you synchronise more than one key fob at the same time then wait at least 40 seconds after synchronising the first key fob; before beginning the synchronisation of the second key fob.

Touch Keys

These are the black cylindrical objects often fitted to your keyring and in the event of a key fob failure you can disarm the alarm using this, from new the vehicle came with two touch keys but they may be missing, damaged, or not passed between subsequent owners. This has a receiver and is located on the right hand side of the steering column low on the dashboard lower fascia and needs identifying by any new owner.
Unlock the driver’s door manually, sit in the driver’s seat and the alarm will activate, touch the round end of the touch key into the round end of the receiver located on the lower dash fascia and the alarm/immobiliser will be disarmed.

Disarming the Alarm Manually

For this you need the PIN CODE and you need to put the PIN code into the system manually. To do this you put the ignition key into the ignition and turn the ignition on and off rapidly, three times in under 7 seconds, the LED will illuminate and stay illuminated for a short period and indicate you are in programming mode.

Turn your ignition ON and it will begin flashing, once it has flashed the first number of your PIN code you turn the ignition off, and then on again and it will flash the second digit of your PIN code, repeat this until you have flashed all your four numbers of your PIN code in and start your engine.

Let us assume your PIN code is 2954.

Turn your ignition on and off three times, rapidly, and in under 7 seconds.
Your LED on the right hand side will illuminate and remain illuminated for about 3 seconds and then extinguish, you are in programming mode.

Turn your ignition ON and let the LED flash twice to signify 2 and turn the ignition OFF.
Turn your ignition ON and let the LED flash 9 times to signify 9 and turn the ignition OFF.
Turn your ignition ON and let the LED flash 5 times to signify 5 and turn the ignition OFF.
Turn your ignition ON and let the LED flash 4 times to signify 4 and turn the ignition OFF.

You have now entered your PIN code manually, turn your ignition ON and your LED will illuminate for3 seconds to signify the end of the sequence; turn the ignition off and start your engine as normal and drive away, when you turn off your engine the alarm should reset itself.

If you make a mistake during the manual entry of your PIN code, wait for 10 seconds and it will restart the process.

Obtaining new key fobs and/or new touch keys is a fairly easy process, if you obtain your PIN CODE this you can E-mail it to:

support@cobracartech.co.uk

You can also send your Serial Number to this address and they will send you your PIN code.
Once you have your PIN code you can send this directly to them and order new key fobs, they come with a full set of instructions for programming them to your vehicle.

Key fobs for both the 8165 and the 8185 are the Cobra 7777B and you can also buy just the cases for them if the rubbers above the operating buttons are damaged, simply open the fobs and remove the circuit board from the old key fob and put it into the new housing.

Can a site admin please edit this as your editing seems to have a mind of its own and does what it likes and not what was done.
