Hi guys looking for some advice regarding the above, the leak appears to be from the top of the rack where the steering shaft joins

the rack so I assume it’s a seal that’s perished, question is can anyone here recommend how to proceed with it,

I’ve taken it to two garages who both say it’s can’t be repaired due to top seals not available, but what do the experts on here say,

Other options / choices are, buy a new one from Mitsubishi £4786 or consider a recon unit from £300,

Or is there another option, thanks in advance.

Of course another option is a used part: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123064001990

Potentially cheaper, but more of a risk !

Do you reckon a MK3 one would fit?  You could buy a cheap used one to see if it would and then if it does buy a new MK3 one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192783148349

Hi and thanks for that, I did consider doing that but as I need to get it fitted at a cost of approximately £100-120 quoted I’d have to do that at least twice so it’s not that much cheaper in the long run than just buying a recon unit,

And there’s the potential problem of that leaking as well with no warranty offered, if I knew for sure that a mk3 would fit I would buy a new one from Millers at £238 but not sure, so there’s the dilemma,

Might have to just bite the bullet and buy the one on eBay for £350 and get it fitted for quoted price of £100-120 unless there’s another option, will keep topping it up in the mean time. Thanks again.

If you know, or can find out, the part number of the rack that's fitted to your vehicle you can then check this against the Milners product.   If you can't find the part number online, I'm sure a dealer will give it to you if you ask them for a price.

When I was in the same boat as you I went for a recon unit.

Still going strong - just over 2 years old now and about 35K miles later.

Hey medicman, I had exactly the same problem.  I got a recon one from Ebay and used it with no problems at all for a couple of years before then selling the car.  Can't remember which company now but they seemed to have a good reputation both on and off eBay.  Even provided packaging and arranged the courier to collect the leaking one from the garage I had the work done at in Gateshead.  It was all rather better than expectation, which is unusual these days.

Hi guys and many thanks for the replies, Di-Dick the company I’m looking at is I think the same one you used,

WPS the specialists from Bristol they have 2 steering racks on offer for my mk4

one at £298 with 3 year warranty and one for £348 with 5 year warranty they call it the gold standard one, with new track rod ends

and paid return by courier of the old unit, so will probably go for that one, a local garage has suggested £100-120 to fit it,

Sounds good to me compared to Mitsubishi,s at £4786 fitted so it’s a no brainer, thanks again guys.

They are a bit of a pig to fit. I think the labour might be a bit more that you have there but even so, quids in.

Total *beep*, of course the seals are available as the reconditioners get them to recondition racks and from memory there are two types, one is the triple O ring and top dust seal, and the double lipped oil seal type.

Hi guys just a final update on my steering rack leak,

That’s it sorted, ended up buying a rack from WPS Bristol £350 and fitted by local Mitsubishi dealer for £270 + £54 for tracking,

It didn’t come with track rod ends so I bought a new pair from eBay £40,

They struggled to remove the old rack due to 10 year old bolts and had to keep it overnight, my options from them were

Buy a new one from them for over £4500

Buy a value part £1073

Or they remove the old one and try and repair it for £735

So approximately £700 in the end but feel I had little choice, thanks for all the replies.
