French car warning! Got what sounds like a aux belt squeak on a Citroen Xsara Picasso but I've tried the usual tricks to diagnose it with a squirt of water, no difference then I rubbed a bit of soap in and it doesn't stop the chirping, about once per second. After watching it for a while I'm wondering if its the tensioner or idler pulley that might be squeaking, the belt seems OK on the visual and I think the tensioner pulley is jumping a little and putting a wobble in the belt movement but its a split-second thing that's difficult to see. The tensioner seems automatic I'm not sure if there's any adjustment in it.

Everything on this car is difficult to access and its already had me wrong footed me with funny noises on several occasions. No doubt I'll have to bite the bullet and strip the wheel area out to get some access but plan A was simply to replace the belt and now I'm not sure that is the problem. There's a total of six pulleys in the belt and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for finding the difference between a belt and pulley squeak?

Well the pulleys seem OK but the aux belt was totally knackered on closer inspection and then I found the timing belt sat half way off its pulleys and shredding onto an engine mount with the debris collecting in the bottom pulley and going round like dough in a blender. Reckon its been like that for some time as there was bits of corrosion on the pulleys where there should have been belt. Crisis averted but jeez it took hours to get six little bolts out of the timing cover, mostly because I didn't have a trained chimp mechanic to access them, makes you appreciate good jap engineering and having space to get a spanner in.
