No worries I get the fussy bit. Someone correct me, but my understanding of the half mast button was for when you're heading off road but also need an FM soundtrack...

The half mast position may be useful if you fit a DAB+ radio to the vehicle. When I put a DAB+ set into the daily Toyota, rather than have two aerials I knocked up a suitable attenuator / splitter circuit that allows me to use its original o/s/f pillar mounted aerial for both DAB and analogue reception, this ideally requires the mast to extend around 6" from the top of the pillar for best reception of DAB, but it's best fully extended (2ft 8") for any of the analogue bands. Too much aerial is bad when you want the best DAB reception, too little and your analogue reception will become prone to noise in poor reception areas.
I can simply reach out of the window to pull some aerial in or to extend it to suit, but a button that reduces the length of the mast when I'm out of analogue coverage or want to listen to a DAB only station? That's the way to keep my right arm dry on long journeys in rain!
*Goes to eBay, looking for pillar aerials that have motors and some form of indexing arrangement, not finding any, must change the car..*

Very Happy

I thought that I was the only victim of this cruel form of obsessive behaviour, thanks for making me feel "normal!"

Trouble is that all the aftermarket ariels that I've seen only have 3 leads (ie no separate mast control), so if you want half mast its mitsi original only I'm afraid. What you can do with an aftermarket ariel (and what I'm about to do) is wire the trigger cable to the antenna switch, so you can lower the mast completely by the switch and still keep the power to the radio/player on.
