The brake warning light is on all the time on my 2003 3.2 shogun. When you start the car the light goes off then comes on after a couple of seconds. When you put the hand brake on the light gets brighter. Disconnected the fluid indicator and it’s still on. Abs light comes on then goes off. Any ideas
Thanks

Have you checked the level in the brake reservoir as if this is low can light this up (or is that just the older models?) Also there is a rubber seal in the cap sometimes it can get pushed up you need to make sure the rubber insert is pulled out if that makes sense.

The wire from the harness goes to the bottom of the master cylininder and not to the cap where the rubber seal is

Yes that's right but if that seal is incorrectly seated it can affect the alarm light (don't know why) It should be extended down and not compressed into the cap. Are your brake levels ok?

Yes the seal is fine and fluid level is fine. If the wiring harness is disconnected from the master cylinder should the light still be lit?
Also what conditions should there be on the two wires coming from the main harness, they are black and black/yellow ? Put a tester on and there is no power on either wire. Shorted the two wires from the harness and then on start up light stays on all the time and not going out for a couple of secs then coming back on as it does when they are not shorted. The two wires coming out of the master have an open circuit so it looks to me as if the master cylinder must have to give out some sort of signal to put the light out after the chech when the ignition is on.

Not sure if you got this problem sorted but I had the same on my mk2 pajero, tried all the usual,  checked levels ,brakes and connectors . Turned out it needed and fluid change, old brake had lot of water in and was filthy. Changed and no problems since, and it stops better Smile

Isn't this the other way around?  i have many times pressed the seal back into the cap to extinguish a brake warning light......

Yep - pressed up into cap = light off.

I have also had the same problem on my MK1. Somehow the rubber seal in the master cylinder cap manages to expand down into the reservoir.

Has anyone ever proven what causes this?
