Recently changed alternator on paj 1995 LWB 2.8 TD auto diesel and now 80amp fuse (fitted In between alternator and battery) keeps blowing but only when I start her
Searched all over for an bad earth but not found it. so just trying to rule things out
do I need a few in any case between alternator and battery?
any suggestions or ideas?

I think you've answered this question yourself, if the fuse is blowing it's because more current is flowing than should be, without a fuse there's nothing to stop potential damage and maybe even a fire!
Have you fitted a new alternator with the same rating as the old one? |

I know - I was just wondering if the OP had got it confused. It would explain why it was blowing only when starting the engine. |

thanks for replies
helps to know that is the heater fuse
the heater does come on automatically when I disconnect and then reconnect the battery and put the ignition key in
everything works ok - meaning the fuse is ok until I start her, then the fuse blow.
going to keep on checking to see if I have a bad earth somewhere - but i'm baffled - if it's just the heater fuse and the heating works ok when car engine isn't running
so why should it blow as soon as I start her?

Is it that fuse on the battery terminal that is blowing! |

yer that's the one
I've done a voltage drop test using load - alternator is ok but battery is not charging
so if the 80amp fuse has nothing to do with the alternator charging the battery, then I need to look elsewhere
only ideas I have so far are to look for a bad earth between alternator and battery (battery is 3 months old - have 3 other spare batteries ready charged and same happens on all ie; no charge from alternator)
I am willing to consider I am overlooking the obvious here, my abilities are patchy - i'm just the sort that gets stuck in and finds out as I go along!
cheers keep 'em coming |

That one does the glow plugs - also known as heater plugs - so you have a short on the glow plug circuit if that one is blowing. |
