When I select 4 wheel drive with the gear stick, a flashing orange light appears in the middle of four wheel drive diagram on the dash board. I am presuming the car is not in 4WD. Has anyone come across this before and can tell me how to fix it.

Is this on a mk3 if so thats the dreaded orange flash of death! The centre diff orange flashing light means there is a fault in the 4wd system usually caused by under use. You might be able to clear it by using the 4wd more. Selecting and deselecting. I had this but it was constantly flashing in any configuration. Possible faults could be gearbox switches sticking or faulty and most people i have read about change these switches and its not the easiest job as the gearbox has to be lowered (not removed) to gain access to them. My fault was the gear selector in the cab was defective and the contacts in there were worn and old.
There is loads on here about the orange flashing centre diff Use the RED search button above and you will see its a common issue.
Hope you get it sorted
