OK   I've got a Mk2  2.8 lwb manual
Been getting a weird scraping noise coming from the back end..brakes are ok
found a bit of play in the uj where it joins the diff
brought a new uj
now looking at it , it dosnt look like it comes apart,
there are no circlips and it looks like the cups are just pressed in
Is this a job for a workshop or am I missing something?
am no stranger to replacing uj s  (brought up on Triumphs where you have to replace them almost yearly)
HELP
mike

Staked joints are a bit less simple to do than the ones with circlips, but assuming you can press the old cups out, the usual way to replace these is to weld washers of appropriate thickness and o/d into the yokes which will fit flush when the cups are in their correct positions. Unless of course you have access to a hefty enough crimping tool and then you can fit the new joint and reproduce the original method of retaining the cups.
If you're at all unsure about this, then there's no shame in putting the shaft in to a specialist to do the job, an approach that's worthwhile as you can then get the finished shaft balanced at the same time. That said; overhaul kits for staked u/js often include washers of precisely the right dimensions to use for the welded approach and this way,the job isn't significantly harder than doing the older joints with circlips.

I recall my UJ having Circlips in it? they were on the inside of the joint instead of the outside like you'd see in some things

that would make sense the uj did come with clips, I'll have another look.....I wouldn't trust my welding on such an important joint......big thanks...mike
