Hi
I have a petrol one and have been over rivers where the water has gone over the hood with no problems. However once I drove really fast over a large puddle and the engine stopped.... so things can happen.
However petrol engines are "better" if it comes to water entering them. Diesel engines work on more pressure so the changes of bent piston rod etc are higher. As with everything there are pros and cons but diesel/petrol is not a game changer when crossing water.

Thank you. I was thinking of buying the petrol anyway
