|
|
Why - if at all - is the braided section of the exhaust system required on a car with the engine mounted north to south as the Mini's is?
I get why this is a good idea on a car whose engine fits east to west, but as a longitudinally fitted engine doesn't rotate about the car's east/west axis, then surely the solid pipe - found in pretty much every other car whose engine is mounted so - would be an adequate and longer lasting fix for a slightly blowing section of the braid?
Is this more about collision crumple ability than engine vibration? The 4A30 is an incredibly smooth device as it is, so my plan was to use the flanges from the (original!) braided section, weld a piece of solid s/s pipe as found everywhere else in the Mini's exhaust system between the original flanges in place of the braided stuff, which was originally bms, I'm guessing because Mitsubishi & Nissan considered currently available stainless too brittle.
The position of the "tail" pipe means that a rear end impact would bend it forwards into the o/s/r tyre rather than cause damage further upstream, so has anyone any good reasons to offer as to why solid pipe ought not to be used?
I don't mind forking out for a new braided part if it will last another 22 years, but both Mitsubishi and Nissan (Kex being a badge engineered Mini) can supply a guaranteed part or a universal one can be obtained for under a tenner, but I have some lovely stainless exhaust tube in my garage attic and that's effectively free as I only need eight inches of it, plus a couple of carbon pencils for the welder, a few pence worth of electricity and a new aaa cell - helmet screen for the instant darkening of.
