Hi. I have a Shogun Sport 1995 TD. The air con is not working and the MOT centre say it is the air con compressor. Is there a way i can test the compressor? Any advice on how to locate and check the compressor would be much appreciated. Thanks. Dan

Compressor is on the front of the engine, driven by a belt.  It's not really possible to test it without specialist kit.  Why did the garage suspect the compressor rather than lack of gas?

Some places (like Kwik Fit) offer your money back if they regas the system and the temperature of the air outlet doesn't get cold. Might be worth checking this out locally and giving it a go.

Or just take the vehicle to a vehicle air conditioning specialist.  If it is the compressor that's faulty, be prepared for a substantial bill.  My compressor failed and I had to replace the entire air con system, pipes and all. ££££££s.

Thanks Simon. The garage said they gassed the system and it did not work. They did not charge me though and it seemed to me that they had almost forgotten to look at it. The system worked fine before and i thougt it wax probably gas escaping due to lack of use and hence lavk of oil movement sealing rubbers etc.

I will try your Kwikfit suggestion- that will at lest rule out gas.

Does anyone have a guide to remove the air con compressor if that does not work? A second hand one is not that expensive but new is a big problem as that seems to need a load of other parts!

If it's been gassed once and failed, it's probably not worth trying it again unless you think they did something wrong the first time around.  

The compressor is easy to remove. It's just a belt, a couple of mounts and then the pipes.  But beware - a new compressor needs dosing with oil and then gassing. It's not a job for Kwikfit or similar. I tried this same route and my new compressor failed within a year as they didn't put the right amount of lubricant in it.  Not only did it fail, but bits of metal went into the system and that's why everything had to be replaced.

I can only repeat my earlier advice - go to a specialist.   It might not even need a new compressor - the clutch for example could have failed and these can sometimes be replaced.
