Hi all

99 NL GLS 3.5l petrol 4dr  - no mods
New to the forum, 20 yrs with a pajero NL

Before I invest any further money wanted some opinions - I had the motor overhauled last year, engine out and replaced everything on the outside of the motor from the radiator to the clutch, - the alternator was reconditioned after being covered in oil from a leaking rocker cover.

I am currently getting some odd behaviours - either after the car is restarted when warm or on long trips the voltage seems to drop, volt meter drops around 1 volt, fuel level drops by up to a quarter, oil drops a bit, temperature guage is unaffected - car also seems to run a bit rough. No real pattern after that but seems to go up and down a bit and repeats.

Suspect that is the reconditioned alternator having variable output but wanted to check, does anyone have any ideas of other related issues or similar or things to check before I go and fit a new alternator.

Have you checked all battery and earth connections are clean and tight especially the negative connection onto the body and onto the engine block. Is the alternator belt tensioned and the connections there all firm.

Other wise the fault could well be the voltage regulator as you consider.
