Hey guys I was hoping that someone would be able to help me clarify something. When I am driving my pajero at freeway speeds in between 40 to 100 kph. It will say for instance be at 2000rpms but as I'm trying to gain speed it will rev up and down exactly 250 rpms. But it does this while I'm trying to obtain any where from 40 60 80 and 100 kph. And will do this strange thing the whole time not at just 2000rpms. Once I reach 100 or before I get to 40 it will not do it. Is there maybe a sensor going out or something. When I pulled the egr vacuum hose it seemed to do it worse but as far as engine performance it is so much better. Sorry for the long post but i have no idea as to what the problem could be. |

Is it an automatic? They can do all sorts of funny things with engine speed. |

Sorry I didn't realize I had left out that information. It is a 1994 2.8 and it is an automatic swb |

I haven't had a Pajero Auto, but I have owned several autos over the years.
Check your fluid level in the gearbox. Usually done after the box is warm and with the engine running, but check in the manual for your vehicle. It does sound from your symptoms like it's just a jerky gearchange? Fluid level could cause that as it hunts to pick up when changing gear.
{Probably need someone who knows these gearboxes to comment) |

Ok I can check the gearbox fluid. Also I saw that member rich r said with the 2.8 electric sensors it could be due to a malfunctioning tachometer. Mine does work only half the time do you guys think this could be it. If so do I have to buy a new gauge cluster or is there a way to fix just the tach. |

Ok gearbox is perfectly filled and the fluid is still cherry red. It did not smell burnt either. I've noticed while the revs are going up and down if I press the accelerator to make it stop it'll go into overdrive and rev to 4000 rpms. If I let off the accelerator it will downshift. Of course it starts bouncing up and down again when I try to resume speed once more. Do you guys know anything else I can check. |

Yes kick down cable is a good point. You also have an adjustment on the injector pump that can be adjusted to make the gearbox change gear at higher or lower revs . And there is also a temperature sensor at the front of the engine that won't allow overdrive or converter lock to work properly if it's gone bad. . |

Hi all letting you know I haven't had the chance to adjust the kickdown cable yet. Is it as simple as it seems? I've never adjusted one before. And yes overdrive does work its also started doing the revs at 100kmh too. It seems as if it does not want to go past 80kmh. If I press the accelerator gently to gain speed it will barely improve. If I press it hard it revs straight to 4000 rpm. |

Adjust the throttle position sensor on the fuel pump so it changes up the gears faster. |

Ok I'll adjust the tps if this kick down cable doesn't make a difference. It seems it may have already been adjusted. Do I adjust it to the left or right. And do I leave the throttle cable where its at? |

it is a bit of trial and error adjusting it, generally just loosen it off a bit and try it out , if required loosen a bit more until it is right. |
