Hi all,
New to this forum.
Can anyone tell me a quick way to check the cam belt condition without dismantling the whole front of the engine please?

Hi Sparkyxm,

You should be able to take a small cover off the left hand cam cover, it will only show you the back of the belt, but if you are in doubt about the condition of the cam belt just change it  Very Happy

Thanks for that, I'll have a look.
It's only done 43k but seems untouched, great condition for a 1998.

If it's only done 43Km in 22 years I would get it changed as soon as possible, preferably yesterday   Wink

Although the recommendation is to change the cam belt every 100000 Km (60000 miles) the fact that it has obviously stood for long periods to do such low mileage, I would change it as it is still possibly 22 years old and the rubber could be starting to perish  Shocked

Also if it is the 24 valve engine it does NOT have a safe spot to protect it in the event of the cam belt failing  Sad

Doesn't look too bad having looked under the cove, however I can only really see the back of the belt.
Got someone lined up to do it very soon  Smile

Definitely do this, when I bought my Shogun the tensioner was that bad it disintegrated when I was changing it.
