Hi All,

My Diesel shogun sport is coming up to 20 Years old still runs well,

I was adjusting my rear brake shoes by accessing the adjuster through the backplate and noticed they are starting to rot out. From the manual I have it looks like in order to change them the rear wheel bearing may have to come off plus some other parts.

Anybody done this job or changed rear wheel bearings - Do you have any photos?

TIA,

Towball

It's possible to cut slots in replacement backplates, then weld them back in once the rest of the backplate is around the axle.  This is probably much easier than removing the half shafts. I've not had to do it - only read about it.

I don't run any, I cut them off to stop stones getting stuck in behind them.

Doesn't part of the handbrake mechanism mount on the backplate?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I have removed excess material. However the tinworm is taking hold. The metal around the slot where you use a screwdriver to adjust the shoes gave way the last time I adjusted them.

Simon you are quite right and the handbrake shoes are mounted on this plate.

Cutting a slot is not an option as far as I can see as the plate is sandwiched between the axle tube and bearing carrier. Maybe it can be done if you partially separate the tube and bearing carrier.

Looks like nobody has done it and to be honest it looks a pig of a job.

Thanks

All,

Job done. No wonder nobody has done this job as it is a pig.

Jack up car and support

Remove wheel
Remove brake caliper
Remove disk
Remove back plate nut and washers
Remove hand brake shoes and hardware
Remove ABS sensor
Using slide hammer removed half shaft
Remove ABS ring from half shaft
Remove snap ring
Cut away retaining ring
Press shaft off bearing and hub carrier
Remove remainder of bearing
Press new bearing into carrier
Press carrier onto shaft
Press retaining ring onto shaft
Replace snap ring
Refit ABS ring - ensure distance from flange is 19.4mm to 20mm
Rejoint flange faces
Refit half shaft
Replace flange nuts and washer and torque up
Replace hand brake shoes - The springs and cups are very tight
Replace disc
Replace caliper and pads
Blead system
Adjust handbrake
Replace ABS sensor
Replace road wheel

And now for the other side
