Further to recent correspondence on the topic of auto transmission fluid for 2.8 Shogun.... On speaking to my transmission specialist of 40 years experience, he says that only fluid to spec SP III should be used..... Some say that Dexron II or III can be used, well this will allow your box to shift but it will not produce the correct lubrication factor for these highly stressed transmissions... You have been warned... Miller Oils do the SP III for around £25.00 per 5 litres, snd they will deliver to your own front door, how good is that?

Ale.

I think we need to be a bit careful here about recommendations from any company other than Mitsubishi.

As I have said before in one of your previous posts,

"My UK MK2 Shogun Has the oil Requirement Stamped into the AutoBox Drain plug (It has DII Stamped on the head of the plug - Thus requiring Dexron II)"

It even lists ATF Dexron II or equivalent as the Auto Transmission fluid in the owners manual which came with the vehicle from new.

Hence I use Dexron II or equivalent.

Have you had a look at your drain plug ?

Hi
Yes, looked at plug, nothing marked on the plug at all. Spoke to Service Dept at local Mitsubishi dealer and they confirm that only SP III should be used in Mk3 2.8 Turbo Diesel Automatic (this is the vehicle in question, no other). All very confusing, think I might just rip the box out and fit a manual!!!

The Mk3 Shogun as far as I know has a different Transmission to the Mk2 and 2.5, and the newer gearboxes do use a different spec Transmission Fluid to the older ones hence the difference.

I have just checked the official Mitsibushi Transmission Manual for my vehicle and I am definately using the correct fluid.

So to add to your warning.

"Identify you Transmission/Transaxle before you purchase the ATF for your vehicle"

Just so we can help others what is your Transmission/Transaxle number in a Mk3 Shogun.

Maybe we can put some info together on Gearbox types and the correct fluid.

Hope this helps.

That sounds like an idea... I can go back to my "friendly" service man and ask him what the correct ATF fluids should be used in all Mk3 Auto boxes, both Petrol & Diesel, and maybe you could do likewise with Mk 2 boxes? I'll post my findings by the end of this week. That should get the ball rolling for Mk 2 & 3 models, and hopefully someone will chime in with other models.. There will soon be a difinitive answer to this.....

Great!

I will dig out any Transmission Fluid info I have from The Mitsubishi manuals I have...................

If any others want to post what fluid is DEFINITELY recommended for their Transmissions then that would be even better. (No guesses or recommendations from companies who don't sell the right stuff but they can sell you something that will do)!

Transmission Fluid List coming up!  Very Happy

Here you go with a bit more info:

V4AW2 Transaxle (Autobox and Transfer Box)
V4AW3 Transaxle (Autobox and Transfer Box)

For the above two Transmissions the recommended lubricants are as follows:

Automatic Transmission Fluid:
Diamond ATF SP, ATF Dexron II or Equivalent

Transfer Box:
Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 75W-85W Conforming to API Classification GL-4 or Higher

This info is straight from the Mitsubishi Transmission manuals for the above Transmissions, and should cover most MK2 and Mk2.5 Pajero, Shogun and Montero models.

Check your Transmission number first!

All this info can be found here: Mitsubishi Links

Hope this helps,  Wink

Hope this helps too.
For Mk3 Diesel models the transmission (auto box) fluid should be to Mitsubishi spec SP III. Millers Oils do this, and it can be ordered on line and delivered to your door... The price is around £25.00 per 5 litre container but it is good stuff...
Word of caution on this subject.. The Haynes manual states that SP II or III should be used in all boxes... NOT so as the owners manual states that this should not be used on 2400 vehicles... Only Dexron II is recomended for this transmission..
Hope this finally sorts out the auto box fluid question.

I had a chat with one of the workshops at Gatwick who service and maintain most of the ground equipment.....they pulled up the details of my pajero a 1994 2.8 auto on the data base the recommended ATF is dexron II.......

Unfortunately the workshop don't use dexron II they only use dexron 4 full synthetic  Razz  and I'm free to change my ATF in the workshop......happy happy happy.

Bear in mind that drain plugs were stamped and owners manuals were written getting on 15-20 years ago. Technology has moved on along with fluid technology, spiii atf's are backwards compatible with all the older ones and is the best to put in your auto boxes, thats why mitsubishi only stock spiii spec, saves them putting the wrong stuff in to a box and it costing them a fortune.

There is stack and stack on here about atf's, do a search and look up Assassins posts on the subject, he's the atf and oil guru on here and will set you straight  Very Happy

As I have previously explained numerous times, Dexron II is not recommended for these boxes, it was only a get you home measure or get you to a dealer only measure where the dealer would replace it with the correct Mitsubishi/Dia Queen SP II, this is not the same as Dexron II.

Mitsubishi/Dia Queen SP was called SP or SP II as there was no SP I.

Plugs were so marked as dealers knew only to fill with SP II as that was all they stocked, so the plug marking was for independents to fill with Dexron to get the vehicle to the dealer who would fill with SP II.

Many of the original manuals were printed with the wrong specification ATF as they were printed years ahead in large batches to keep costs down, and where the vehicle was still maintained by a main dealer they put a supplementary page into the handbook with the revised specifications and the dealer usually crossed out the incorrect information in the handbook, unfortunately most of these pages were just left loose and often fell out or were lost, but not all as some dealers stapled them in.

Bear in mind at that time SP II was a little used ATF and it was so superior to anything else on the market that it was the only thing to use and it was only used in a few vehicles it was difficult to get hold of other than from main dealers.

When SP III was developed it was designed to be backwards compatible, therefore it could be used in a box designed for SP II and the super select systems which were now fitted to the later MK II's and MK III models.

When the Asian car market started to become developed they looked for an autobox and chose Aisin as they are Asian designed and built and the popularity of these autoboxes meant there was an aftermarket large enough for lubricant manufacturers to produce SP III in large quantities to satisfy the aftermarket demand for it profitably.

If you have a handbook which says use Dexron II its wrong, it also has its revision page missing, so stick to SP II or SP III.
