Currently writing up a list of fluids and parts for a major service. Not helped by a manual written ~20 years ago!
For a 2003 Petrol 3500 GDi with rear A/C it requires 10.5 litres of coolant. Manual says to use "Dia Queen Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent" so my question is, what equivalents would currently be appropriate?
Also, manual warns against using tap water ("Do not use tapwater, as it can cause corrosion and rust formation") so what is actually recommended?
Distilled water and an 'equivalent' anti-freeze mixed 50% to make 10.5 litres? |

This meets the specifications and is a good brand, mix it 50:50 with distilled water and it will last for 5 years without issue.
Never use plain tap water as this causes corrosion and issues over the long term, I would also suggest flushing and cleaning your cooling system first, to do this:
With your engine hot, remove the bottom radiator hose and beware of burning yourself, this flushes a lot of the larger debris out if there is any, and it causes the loosening of any nearly loose debris, remove the plastic engine trim cover, look at the drivers side of the engine where you will find the thermostat, off this is a metal pipe which connects to a rubber pipe, remove this pipe, refit the radiator hose by just pushing it on, get a hosepipe and flush through the 3/4" pipe you have disconnected on the engine and flush this through with the hosepipe until you see water coming out, remove the radiator cap and flush the radiator, keep flushing until everything runs clean.
Refit all the pipes and fill the system with plain tap water run he engine until warm, note that these cooling systems have rear heaters and also a lot of voids which trap water, and this flushing dilutes it and helps remove this trapped water, drain again and part fill with clean tap water and add a good cooling system cleaner, then top up with water, run the engine to the cleaner manufacturers recommendations then drain and clean again by flushing to remove all the cooling system cleaner and contamination it removes.
Fill the cooling system with 4.75 litres of anti freeze and top up with distilled water. |
