I thought I had a leak on my system from the rear pipes but it turns out I didn’t, got the system tested and gassed up on one of the big machines at Kwik Fit, afterwards it was blowing ice cold.
It seems to have gradually gotten less effective, to the point where it still blows cooler air than outside and is working to a degree but not very well, the compressor is still clicking in when you press the button so I’m guessing it’s unlikely to be gas, is there anything else that could cause this?.

To add, I’ve just been out to check, when I have the AC off the end of the compressor, (clutch part I think) is not spinning when I turn the AC on it starts spinning so I think the compressor is working as it should, it definately has gas but just isn’t blowing very cold at all, is there anything else I can check?.

The trucks with rear air con units need more gas than the ones with just front air con.

Mine was only blowing cool rather than cold so I took it to a proper air con place and they said it looked like Kwick Fit had only put enough gas in for the single air con system. So check you have enough gas in it.

I thought the same thing, it definately has enough gas in it, got someone to put gauges on it, only happened in the last week or two, it was very cold before that, the compressor is still coming on and off as it should too, really scratching my head as to what could cause this, blower fan is working fine too, the light for the AC is coming on, really don’t know what it could be?, is there a valve anywhere that needs to open?.

when i took my mk2 to kwikfit they messed it up,they didn't know where the high pressure valve was, decided to take it to a dedicated air-con place where he did a leak test on it then removed all old refrigerant then weighed the gass on some scales before filling it and it was spot on for years after that,it took him about an hour altogether, where kwikfit took around 20 minutes.

agree with the above, because they are only used with modern cars, which are relatively simple. Thats why you need to find a dedicated aircon specialist.

I can only agree with all the above comments, Kwikfit are rubbish at anything other that tyres (and even then its sometimes a challenge)

Machines are no good, they dont take into account anything other than system pressure and weight my old work vehicle had ac front and rear and the correct procedure was to fill to a certain weight then carry on slowly until no bubbles could be seen in the sight glass, completely impossible to do correctly on a machine, the result would be enough gas in the system to allow it to operate but not enough for it to operate correctly  Sad

Get in touch with Ian at SubZero, im not sure if hes on here now but he certainly used to be. he's mobile too  Very Happy  07843 036155 tell him i sent you  Laughing

Thats why most people call them thick fit.

You cant get thicker than a thick fit fitter.

The problem is simple, they do not employ specialists, they get 1/2 days training on the equipment from the suppliers and they can extract and fill with new refrigerant and thats about it, they can operate their machines to do the pressure test and some can use their somewhat limited brains and actually do the leak tests and actually put the vehicle on the ramps and look for the flourescing dye to identify any leaks if you are very lucky.

In reality it takes about an hour to do the leak test correctly and they never do that because they are on bonuses to complete jobs to keep turn over up, they do an MOT in about 10 minutes, often they cannot balance wheels correctly as they do not set the machines correctly if they have anything but the standard taper cone as they cannot change the cones on the balancing machine, eg, it would take me or Mark about 20 seconds to change cones and about another 20 seconds to run the balance test with the new cones, and god forbid they have to fit a model specific boss; simply it is this, do the job as quickly as possible for your pocket and make it look as good as possible for the customer.
