Just got a 2007 Elegence with all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately the audio on the radio is intermittent. Some times you get in and start up and the radio is audible but most times it is not. It changes stations and frequencies and tunes in (according to the display) its just that you can not hear anything. It has the Mitsubishi Multi Communication System and everything else seems to work.
Are these units repairable? If I have to get another unit from a breakers, will it just plug and play or will it need coding ETC to my vehicle?
Other than that its a cracking motor. Great to drive.

Have you got a pic of it, I have a spare unit which fits in the dash for my 2005 elegance.

Unfortunately the 2005 one is not compatable. If I manage to get the right unit from a breakers is it just plug and play? Anyone out there now if it can be repaired?

Have you been able to remove or at least get at the back of the unit and check the obvious causes like a connector not fully inserted or mated, either on the control unit or close by if there are inline connectors for the speaker lines?  In these cases the first thing I'd do is unplug, jiggle, and re-plug everything to satisfy myself the connectors are all good and haven't vibrated loose. Check the circuit diagram and figure out where the grounds are and ensure they're all working. Check if there's a separate amplifier and if so compare its input and output to determine if it is the problem.

If that didn't resolve it I'd put an oscilloscope on the easiest to access speaker and monitor it - find out if there is any signal arriving, or it's gone to a flat DC voltage or nothing at all (0 volts) - all of which give clues as to the cause.

That sounds like a good shout. As I said earlier, ocasionaly I get sound from the radio so a loose connection would fit that.
Don't know how easy it will be to remove ?????

If it were to be the worse case, Are there aftermarket replacements out there that would fit and give all the functions I have now, Sat Nav, reversing screen etc.
I have been qouted £100 test then £420 repair if its repairable.
Obviously I am going to check all the connections first. When it did give sound, the controls on the steering wheel did not alter the volume.
And as I just completed a reasonable jurney in it, I tried the cruise control which didnt work either so obviously I do not hace any of the controls working from the steering wheel. Would that be related in some way?

This would make me suspect these are further symptoms due to a common cause - most likely a connectivity issue but could be an ECU fault.

Well I have removed the MMCS to check the connections plugs ets. They all seemed to be tight. Unplugged and gave the connections a squirt of electrical cleaner to be sure and plugged back. This has made no difference.
Unfortunately, electrical issues is not my thing so testing various other bits, as suggested by more experienced members on here is outwith my skills.
I ran the vehicle into Halfords to see about fitting an aftermarket double din unit as they fit for free. Originally they said No problem sir, then they checked their system and said that they can not get the cross over harness to get from the original plug to an aftermarket unit.
The guy then rang around and was told that there is no cross over harness available for my particular year (2007) and that it was most of the dash out and lots of wiring mods to fit so they were not interested.
I must say, I find it strange that there is not a cross over harness on the market somewhere to allow for fitting an aftermarket unit.
As I have had the unit out, its easy enough,  I would be happy enough fitting a new unit myself but not wanting to get into anything other than "plug and play"

Just an update as I know its been a while, but now I am using the motor more regularly and we have a few trips planned with the horses for next year, I bit the bullet and took it to my local Audio specialist for diagnostics. Apparently the Amp is goosed, probably dry joint so they are going to replace the head unit with an aftermarket unit that does not require the Amp.  No need for any map updates as I can just plug my phone in and use google maps.
