Hi all, Im having problems with my mk 2 2.5L paj. So after finding I had a leaking high pressure fuel pump I thought I had found where it was leaking from and replaced an o ring but this didn't work, then figured out that it was actually leaking from the gasket so I brought a second hand fuel pump from a breakers (6 month warranty. They said all cars are ran for an hour to ensure all parts sold work fine). Once installed I then learned that it needed priming and didn't realise the white cap on the side on the fuel filter was the primer so I went and got a primer bulb, cut the pipe that feeds the fuel from the filter to the pump and installed it there. Got it primed and cranked the engine so fuel was being pump out of the lines that meet the injectors. Tried to start the truck and it started for about 3 seconds then cut out. So after, I thought it may be the fact that the pump needs fine tuning and after around several hours of tilting the pump, still nothing so I'm wondering if something else may be the problem. Could it be the issue that the primer seems to be able to keep pushing fuel through for around 5 pumps after cranking the engine? I've tried loosening the nuts on the lines to the injectors and it seems to be coming out nice. Also I've checked all around the pump, lines and hoses and can't see any leaks. Been on this for nearly 2 weeks now and I feel so close to completing this ball ache of a job but lack the mechanical knowledge so I'm chuffed with how far I've got but can't seem to figure out what to do next. I am thinking this is maybe a timing issue, I have no idea how you do it, but checking the timing would be a good thing anyway |

and an afterthought, would be good to take the rocker cover off and check the valve gear and cam caps. Maybe when it started if the timing was out of kilter it may have broken the cam caps and or valves |

Hi Emax, thanks for the reply, really appreciate the help, so the next day I went out and played with it some more and found that the hose from the pump that fed the high pressure lines at the injectors needed priming and I also removed the primer bulb and got everything nice and time after priming the whole system again, the truck now runs but revs on its own and doesn't stay running unless power is being given, the revs seem to be very spuradic for it to just need fine tuning with the tilting of the high pressure pump but can't say exactly as when it eventually started running as I said, I noticed quite a bad oil leak coming from under the rocker cover so I stopped what I was doing to fix it. Rocker cover is back on now with a new gasket but yet to fire her up as I need my mate down with his truck for power as I've drained my battery's trying to start the engine lol. Also I'm not sure it would be a timing issue as I got the engine to top dead center and left the pully to the fuel pump in place on the belt and tie rapped all the pulls in place before removing anything and the sprocket thing that goes in to the pully has a key on it so don't see how it would be out of timing. Hopefully when you get some battery power tilting the pump will cure it. Other than that it is most likely to be air in the fuel system. |

Update on current progress...
The truck is finally running... Ish
After hooking it up to some power and yet another priming she started to tick over nicely after altering the idle (I had to take all the parts off of my old pump and put them in my newish one) but then cut out then primed again, ran for longer and better... Then cut out after another several primes the truck was ticking over nicely so I left it running for a bit to gane some power.
Later that night thinking all was good and well I took her to get some fuel and on the way when at idle the revs started to drop but wasn't enough to cut out. Got to. The petrol station and decided to turn it off as I didn't consider how much power I would ofuaed starting her in the first place would have used and how close the petrol station was so didn't get much time to charge back up, and yes she didn't start straight away so the batteries ran dead. After getting a jump from a friendly fellow petrol station user I got back home OK and just as we was parking up the engine died.
Back to chasing the air out the system tomorrow me thinks. Unless anyone may know of anything else this could be? Also she could do with a little more fine running as I am still getting some white smoke but after how she starts instantly and ticks over nice after a prime I really can't see this affecting enough to kill the engine after a drive. |

Sounds like you are winning. The pipes on top of the tank are a favourite place to find a leak,If it is a LWB there is an inspection plate in the cargo area. Make sure there is a a copper or aluminium washer under the fuel filter bleed bolt. Sometimes hard to track down a leak in the fuel system, just have to check all the pipes and clips for security. |

That's very good to know thanks, I'll try and remember that lol. Also great news, after a other priming she started up and hasn't cut out or even wanted to since so I think that's the problem solved.
With that done I focused on fine tuning the pump and it seems to want to lean more to the clockwise position when looking at it from the back, which wouldn't be an issue if the metal line which feeds the fuel in to the pump wasn't hitting the actual structure which the pump bolts to. Still I managed to push it enough so the revs are sweet but still got white smoke and I can see the pump should be able to go further with me not being able to see the gap around the nut, showing yet ( the nut on the left ear lobe thing on the pump if that makes sense?) I have got some pics but not a clue how to upload them. |

Update on the fine tuning, I have managed to get it clockwise (from the back) and now know why it would go anymore. A high pressure line seems to be in the way and not sure why as its the same line as what was on the old pump I removed.
