Sorry if this is the wrong category.  I didn't see an ABS section, so I figured since it's part of the braking system.

2008 NS Pajero 3.0L 6G72 GCC Variant

Since I bought the car, every 2-10 minutes I hear a sound similar to the high-pitched whine of the bulb flash capacitor charging in those old disposable cameras and it drives me nuts.  Today I figured out that the sound is coming from the top of what I think is the ABS pump. Just prior to making the sound the housing (circled) will make the sound of a small mechanical gear mechanism turning (3 seconds) then finish with the capacitor whine.

I have a couple of questions:
- Why does this happen?
- Is this repairable without replacement?
- If replacement is needed, is there likely to be significant damage or danger if I don't repair or replace it?
- I'm having a difficult time locating the part in Mitsubishi parts catalogs online, does anyone have part numbers for what needs to be replaced?

The forum won't let me attach an image or include a link in the post, so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to show anyone the part producing the noise.

Sorry for all the replies, but editing a post is turned off as well.

Braking is working fine. No ABS codes are being thrown. ABS is working fine (had to use it a few days ago).
