Good morning.
I just signed up to the forum as I am looking to buy a SWB Shogun. For the last 14 years I had a 1998 SWB Nissan Patrol. Unfortunately, we had a garage fire 3 weeks ago which destroyed the garage and the Patrol. The Patrol was parked in the garage as I was taking the gearbox apart. Normally no car would have been parked inside.
Anyway, we can’t change the past so have to look forward to the future. I have already looked a Nissan Pathfinder but came to the conclusion that it is to big for our needs. Another SWB works perfect for us. I use it to ferry the dogs around and tow my trailer with mini digger (trailer + digger around 2500kg)
I have two SWB Shoguns for sale locally. One is a 2008 model which looks fine on the photos but has an inoperative rev counter. Haven’t had time to look at it in person but hopefully do that later today. I have read that a broken rev counter is relatively common and it could be an easy fix but it could also be an expensive fix.
The second car I have looked at is a 2015 model. Mechanically it runs well and having laid underneath I couldn’t see any rust either. However, from the inside it is clear that it hasn’t been very cared for. There are deep scratches in the glovebox door (outside), the headlining has multiple dark stains on it, no wheel changing tools, scratches along the interior when the back seats are folded up. It looks to me that it has been used to transport dogs.
The outside has a couple of dents in the rear door, to the left of the door handle. The front off side lower bumper is cracked.
I have priced up some parts and come to a total of about £1000 if replacing everything with new parts. Replacing the parts I can do myself so there won’t be any labour charges on top.
The 2015 model is roughly £4000 dearer than the 2008 model but insurance and road tax is cheaper.
Wondering what Shogun owners think. Would it be worthwhile trying to get a 7 year younger vehicle or would a 16 year old one also be a good investment? This will not be my main car, it will only do about 2000 miles a year and most likely won’t go any further then a 30 mile radius from the house.
Many thanks for your input. |

I've owned a 1990 Pajero and currently own a 2016 Montero (dfferent names, same vehicles). You don't mention mileage, which in my view is more important than age. I'd go for the newer one, assuming average mileage on both.
PS: I had a Patrol too, for 2 years - excellent vehicle. However the current Montero is almost as capable and a lot more comfortable. |
