Another guy said it might be the wheel bearing making a similar noise, so he is going to try that possibility as he couldn't get a propshaft anyway, so I think its desperate measures! |

He took it to the garage and they agreed it was the wheel bearings on BOTH rear wheels. They had the Frontera for the day, but they couldn't get the things undone! They tried all their tricks, even heated them up to red hot and hit them with something, but they won't budge. They have been Vauxhall specialists for 25years and say they've never seen anything like it. They didn't charge but now he is stumped! How do you fix something you can't remove. |

If you can't get it out it looks like a new axle unfortuntely. I just wondered if partfinder worked for cars as well as bikes. They are on the net, but I cant remember the address, sorry. |

I presume that you have the shafts out? Get as much of the bearing out as you can by smashing it up with a hammer and cold chisel then use a die grinder to go 9/10 through the bearing outer and hit it with a cold chisel / hammer
I had the same problem myself some years back on a Mazda 818. . . . |

Hi. Thanks everyone for all this advice! No, they didnt manage to get the shafts out or even the wheel bearings undone! Thats why they didnt charge. He has found another recommended gearbox specialist (40yrs) and spoke to the 'lad.' (specialist is on holiday at the moment.) The lad said they had one like it before and they got it out by tying something to a fixing point in their wall and winching the other end?? Sounds bizarre but if it works, great! We are waiting for him to return from holiday to do the job. I will let you know how it goes. |

The usual way to get the shaft out is with a "slide hammer" if that won’t work then winching it has little chance, they will just bend something or drag the car across the floor!!!! It’s a shame you are so far away I’d help you get it sorted in no time and I would only charge a beer or three. |

I read your post and asked him and the garage who didnt charge did try a slide hammer but it didnt work. He is now worried about the winching!! Lucky the chap's not back yet!! It is making an awful noise, so he has to do something. |

I suppose that if its that bad then do whatever to get the shafts out, if they get bent then you are no worse off than if you can't get them out at all. . . . . there must be something seriously stuck for them not to have come out so far. I am not familiar with the Frontera but as far as i know all rigid axels are pretty much the same. . . . it might just be a case of the old engineers answer. . . if at first you don’t succeed, Try a bigger hammer!! |

I had to replace mine axel on a frontera 3 years ago B$ I had the Paj, I used these people

I think they enter the bit you want onto a computer and it goes to scrap yards around the country, I had one with in an Hr, think it was around £400. |

Hi, Its all fixed now. After all the worries about the back axle, it was both wheel bearings. They managed to fix what another garage couldn't budge, so I will also ask if they told him how they did it, which might be useful! Only other problem was that oil had got on the back brakes so they were also replaced and the job cost around £620. Update: They heated them up very hot and hit them very hard, which is the same as the other garage did, but this time it worked! |

Odd this ..!
Some years back , I had an Opel Manta ..great car and I loved it to bits..!
Only thing I ever had a problem with was ...Wheel bearings ..!
Front Pass side in my case .. changed the axle stub ..etc..and it still would eat them up ... Only fault I ever had with the car.
Things haven't changed I see....!

Although this thread is ancient, i thought i'd add a bit for future owners of these well documented piles of junk - i've owned 4 of 'em and I've never come across such a badly made hotch potch truck in all my life!
IBC - the makers never cared a t**s when they (loosely) screwed these things together. The rear axles have various numbers of teeth on the crown wheel, any two identical models even made in the same batch can have different ratio axles, They just fitted whatever pair came on the forklift. so before ordering/buying a 'new' secondhand one (And you will - the internals are made of cheese) remove the cover and count the teeth, also take the data off the plate on the cover. Fit the wrong one & your pride & joy will bowl along like a good 'un - unltil you select 4WD & it will stop dead (on tarmac) as the front & rear axles try to run at different speeds. The result is massive wind-up & some part of the melted down Kit-Kat wrapper internals will give up - Anothe big bill.
Frontera owners - Sell it to a mug TODAY & use the money to buy an older (but wiser Pajero!) |
