to preserve my pajero{so it has something to do with the paj} i bought the missus a golf {1984}but 1st and reverse are so close she darnt drive it !now i know this is proper cheeky on this site but has anyone got a clue how to sort this ,ps its diesel. oh and once again thanks to all who helped with pa valve probs ,now sorted . 8) |

I would imagine their should be some kind of resistance or the gear stick should have to be lifted or pushed down. At a guess a spring or lever or something is either worn or sticking in the gear stick mechanism.
You can down load some VW manuals from this site. It's a Russian site but alot of the manuals are in English and indicated by (eng)

cheers m8 will go their now,ps went to the scrappers in marbella and they wanted 250e for a second hand box the their is absolutely no resistance at all but then the car is over 20 years old! |

it will be the gear linkage and you can buy a service kit to replace all the bushes and bearings (bit of a pig of a job though) |

Yep agree. They are known for worn gear linkages Think they cost about 120 notes for a full kit. Not to hard to fit just fiddley. |

Just had a look at what Mr Haynes has to say!
The adjustment takes the form of three bolts which hold the linkage to the floor.
The reverse detent is mentioned specifically - Good news is that it's adjustable, bad news is that it looks to be inside the 'box!
Can't scan at home but I could scan the appropriate pages of the manual in work if you let me know. |

all help apreciated, as wife now on tranquilisers and slightly deaf from the impatient spanish horn blowers as im sure anyone driving in spanish rush hr knows what its like if you pause at a jnctn for more than 0.005 of a second! also any body thinking of selling cars ext abroad you ought to check out how much they are over here! www.surinenglish.com in the motors section. |
