looking for advice club members or browsing mechanics.I am getting 20 mpg max.I have adjusted fuel pump four times now and clocked up 300 plus km between each adjustment. Each time still comes out at 20mpg .Use fuel calculator posted a while back.Still smokes when pulling away or accelerating.Only difference has been lack of power at furthest anti clockwise adjustment.Have tried taking off rubber pipe from egr valve but no difference.Wagon is 2.5 exceed mk2 1992.Any ideas or shall I take it to a specialist. If so does anybody know of any in salisbury area .

Hi i am also running a 92 2.5tdi, and up to last week was only getting 18-20mpg i had the pump set at a local diesel specialists and also blanked the egr valve at the manifold, just removing the pipe doesnt work.

I have recently changed air filter, have you done this if not check it cos if its dirty your mpg will suffer. Has the fuel filter been changed in the last year, if not it needs changing.

I have just run 20 quids worth of 5% bio diesel through the Paj and low and behold 24 to gallon towing my twin axle van.

Just a few pointers to try and help you, i know 3 other people with 2.5's and they only managed 20 mpg same as me before, so i wouldnt worry too much.. Rolling Eyes

Farmerrock, I have done similar jobs on my Pajero (2.5 also)... changed fuel filter as Ian did.... and much more.... the mpg stays moreorless same! no improvements!! mine does about 22-23 mpg AT BEST!!

I get surprised at the figures some other 2.5 owners publish!!!

About the Paj still smoking... once you've tuned DOWN the screw it shouldn't smoke.... I did mine MANY times till I got it right! The Paj may slightly smoke when hard accelerating from "0" (at a roundabout for example!)... Have you done fuel system purging ??? This cleans the fuel system of the accumulated black gunge which makes smoking worse!... I had mine done at a service garage and the Pajero BREATHES better and no trails of smoke! Smile

i have a 1989 lwb 2.5 td, and seem to return 28 to gallon, i have just got it, so haven't twiddled with anything - i think i'll leave it set just as it is!! i even have a heavy right foot, and do some off road work !!
so, this should be acheivable by others...

I have a 1990 MK1 2.5 I get 23mpg day to day and on a run on the motorway at a steady 70 - 80 mph I get between 28 - 30 mpg. Nothing special have not played with the pump. New air/fuel filters every 10,000km new oil and filter every 5000km.

As an after thought to this do you know if you have a high ot low ratio rear axle? At 3000 rpm I get 80mph, auto box in o/d mode.

On a recent run to Derbyshire I did I used £39 of fuel at 79.9 p / ltr.
I did 420 KM = 260 Mls.
That works out to 24 MPG

MK 1 2.5 TD LWB
Semi Synthetic oil, 98000 km on clock

Trip was A road running, 90 mls of Motorway at 65 mph, the rest a trip around the Derbyshire lanes and some slight off roading.

In answer to Stumpey`s querie I get to 75 at 3000 rpm with overdrive on .To be honest I could live with the mpg if I knew that was par for the course, but it is the smoking and other members results that niggle away at me.Perhaps I should swap for a mk1!

This MPG question goes round and round Rolling Eyes

Basically anyone getting more than around 26MPG is probably calculating it wrongly.

Most Paj odeometers record on KM's (YES EVEN THE ONES WITH MPH ON THE SPEEDO) so anyone not converting the trip KMs to Miles first will get a much higher MPG figure.

Claims of 30+ MPG are just not true unless you never travel faster than 50mph on Clear motorways and down lots of hills. Not even Mitsi claim they will do this and their MPG testing will be on a rolling road in optimal conditions. I have never heard anyone beating the manufacturer MPG claims (or even being able to achieve them) in any other car so why should Paj's be any different.

I think most of you will find that if you get a calculated MPG of 30 then you probably are not converting KMs to Miles in which case you are probably doing less than 22 MPG.

Sad but True Confused

The problem is not MPG but cost per litre. If diesel cost only 20pence per litre who would care.

If you want to reduce your costs find a local bio diesel producer and support them. Thats the only way to bring your costs down.

Not kidding yourselves with continually trying to recalculate MPG.

Also....

Why keep fooling yourselves you can do a better job that a qualified diesel fitter with the proper test equipment. If its not running right and is very smoky get it set up properly. Then leave it alone.

If it ain't broke don't fix it especially if you don't know what you are doing.

Just my 2 penith worth Twisted Evil

... would like to add... our Pajeros are NOT brandnew, they all did many miles before we got them, so we won't get even close to the manufacturer's mpg figures!! Sad

this subject has got to be the most talked about topic on the site and basically my two penneth worth is this ....if you want decent mpg like 35/40/50 mpg then why the hell by a pajero?its a 2 ton non aerodynamic brick .but they are luxurious and comfortable this in itself surely is a good enough reason to sacrifice mpg well im gettin back in my pram now anyway just what i think Very Happy

Some comments on points raised above.

I doubt that the manufacturers use a rolling road for fuel consumption tests because they wouldn't take aerodynamics & / or drag into acccunt, which will affect fuel consumption.

On the basis that if you are concerned about fuel consumption dont get a Pajero, can you explain why Diesels are so popular.....if its not cos they do more mpg Exclamation

Also please meet the man who has exceeded manufacturers fuel consumption figures, I have. My other car is a 2001 Passatt Diesel, 37k miles, manufacturers specified average consumption 48mpg, my long term average is 49.7 mpg and on an individual journey if I'm careful I have achieved 60mpg, both figures according to the on board trip computer.

All that having been said, I've only bothered to check it on the Paj twice, once on a run fully laden 5 people + luggage, and in a hurry, I got 25mpg, so I was happy, and once on a trip with the caravan on and I got 18mpg, not so good but still better than you would get from a Range Rover solo Exclamation Exclamation

i beleive the diesel if not more economical mpg wise actually produces a better torque than most of the petrol variants with exception of the 3500 v6 24v for some reason the diesel seems to be a favourite in japan possibly because diesel fuel is cheaper there i dont know Rolling Eyes Question but my basic point is that if you want something to return a 50mpg figure then you wouldnt buy a 4wd of any description,as someone said earlier if fuel was cheaper we wouldnt be in this thread now but unfortunately we always get shafted by a goverment that survives on bribes and corruption and mostly robbing the english tax payer to line there own filthy pockets, just my opinion atb marc
