Good morning all,

Has anyone tried mixing their own fuel (vegetable oil+diesel+additives)?

I've read a lot about it and it seems to be very advantageous, not just to the vehicle, but to the environment too (not to mention the wallet!!).
Is it worth the bother and does it have a downside (I'm sure HM Government will find a way of generating revenue from it eventually)

I'd appreciate any comments and observations.

Sadly warlord the goverment allready charges duty,
even if you do make your own, Sad
I think its about 29p per litre.
However they rely on your honesty to pay for the amount you use Wink
There are kits and instructions on how to make the stuff,
if you search this site im sure you will get all the info you need.
Good luck.

If u are using new veg oil try a basic 50:50 mix to start - no additives required, then when you are happy, progress onward. Even 75:25 *should* be quite safe this time of year, been there and tested that Very Happy But hey I accept no responsibility!!!

If using 2nd hand oil it's more complex, lots of help on here and the web too.

Top tip for adding to your tank: warm oil flows better than cold.

I've read a bit about bio fuel. Most sites recommend starting with a 25:75 mix and gradually increasing until the performance tells you you've gone too far - apparently even then you should do no damage!

In cold weather vegetable oil is likely to solidify so it's better sticking to normal diesel or a weaker mix in cold weather. Search in Google under Cheap Diesel and you'll find some interesting sites.

Can I just tip a few litres of vegetable oil into the tank, say 10 litres of VO to 40 litres of diesel, or do I need to take care with the mixing??

Try looking at www.biodiesel.org - this gives a good overview of biodiesel. It claims you should buy the genuine product and explains why, but I have heard and read of people just mixing VO and diesel with no short term problems (no idea about longer term). If it was me I'd play safe!

A low mix like this (20%) will not smell like a restaurant. At a 10:20 (33.3%) mix it will start to be noticeable.

i've been using SVO for about a month now and i can confirm that 20% oil will not smell much but once i got to 40% u could smell it at quite a disstance.last tuesday i tryed about 75% oil the pajero ran fine tuesday but wednesday morning when i started up it was very lumpy and i thought it was going to stall, after about 100yds it was fine the same happened yesterday morning so i put £20 of diesel in last night when i started up this morning it started fine i guess 75% was pushing it.
