New to club got a few questions regarding a pto winch I saw in a junk yard. The winch is already installed on a Pajero 2.5td it looks as if it rolled out of the factory with the winch already on it, any truth to this? Also how much would be involved with removing it and installing on mine? The Pajero is manual, mine is auto will this make a difference. |

My manual (bought from the club shop) has a section on operating a PTO winch so they must have fitted them to some cars. Never seen one though. |

PTO winches are pretty rare, the PTO gearbox bolts on to the side of transfer case.
If you have a look underneath you should a large blank plate about 200mm x 200mm square.
If the transfer box is the same yr as your it should fit (but no guarantee).
And you will need to cut a hole in the floor to accomodate the extra gear level (see the lever in picture below) If you don't have a handle throttle that would be a useful addition.
No idea if it will suit an autobox, running an auto in neutral for extended periods of time, doesnt that cause problems? |

oh and you should check if your exhaust pipe needs to be re-routed to.
If you go ahead dont forget to post some pics
cheers,

yep, as morex4 says, i have a factory fitted winch, it's got me out of trouble a couple of times! (yes. i know i shouldn't go laning on my own, but it's fun!)
it's a bit more fiddly to use than the after market ones, and would benefit from replacing the steel cable with a plasma one, as its a pain to rewind, it sits very neatly and unobtrusively behind the bumper, you have to look to find it.
my paj is manual,it is operated by using the gears. so i don't know about fitting it on an auto.
the pics above show the extra operating lever which sits between the gear lever and the handbrake. |

sorry to dig up an old thread...but is there a difference between the PTO winch for MK1 and MK2 pajeros?...a mate has come across one that is currently fitted to a MK1..and he has a MK2...hence the question. |

The winch itself will essentially bolt up to a gen 2 off a gen 1 but the transfer case drive will not mesh with the gears. THere were some gen 2 PTO's but they are like rocking horse poo. The Gen 1's are much more common.
You can swap the gears in the gearbox to make it work on a gen 2 if you so desire. |

You will need a manual gearbox though, as the PTO is on the transfer box. So you need to be able to have the gearbox supplying drive to the transfer box, and have the transfer box in neutral. Auto gearbox Pajs don't have a neutral on the transfer box, and I suspect the gearbox would get confused by the torque characteristics of winching versus moving the vehicle.
It's bizarre that the Japanese owner's manual devotes so many pages to an option that very few people had fitted. |

The transfer case doesn't have to be in neutral, in fact it is much easier on everything if it is in low as driving takes alot of strain off the winch.
It should work on an auto also. |

True, the transfer box doesn't have to be in neutral, but you do need the option of putting it in neutral if you don't want the car to move whilst winching. The auto transfer box doesn't have a neutral position on it. |
