Hi Trig
The green and blue arrows are:
Green is the turbo wastegate valve which when the boost reaches 0.8 bar it opens and lets out the excess boost down the exhaust
The Blue is a pressure release valve on the inlet manifold set to 1 bar if at any time the wastegate fails then in steps the release valve
Although mine is a 2.8 the system is the same
On testing my boost pressure with a gauge I found that the wastegate was opening at 0.5 bar but the handbook says a max of 0.9 bar so i,m currantly experimenting in trying to set my contant boost to 0.8 bar
Also when I got my Paj it had been fitted with a plate on the EGR valve so I removed the Valve cleaned it checked it and refitted with out plate but found excess smoke so refitted plate and all OK

If Mitsubishi put the EGR there, it must be for a reason, so blocking it off at source or through the outlet pipe means that you are in effect makinging the vehicle faulty.
As everyone has stated, taking the actual EGR off is a simple operation (whether it is on a 2.5 or 2.8), therefore the best option is to take it off, leave it soaking overnight in some clean diesel, brush it clean the next morning, to get rid of residue soot, and put it back on. IE no foreign bodies in the mechanical parts of the car (Golf Tees, Ball Bearings and coke tin...)

Exercise needs only doing once a year before the MOT as the quality of diesel is better here than it is in the country of the Rising Sun.

Hi ronald
I agree with your views and I tried just that but at the cost of some smoke so I put back my plate and no smoke

Hello All
Just an update took the Paj in for a full service and cam and balance belt change yesterday, and told the owner of the garage that the EGR valve was blocked.
How have you done it? he asked when I told him it was just the pipe blocked he replied Do you want us to do it properly? turns out he runs a paj as well and knew all about the mod how cool is that? So its now blanked off with a plate and is still running good.
P.S. its also an M.O.T. testing station so I wouldnt want to drop them in it if they turn a blind eye to blanked off EGRs hence no names.
All the best

Thought you guys might be interested to know that as part of a recent powerup I had done to my 2.8TD by a "gun" diesel tuner they blocked of the EGR and inserted the metal gasket as illustrated in this post. So go for it guys you can do this mod with confidence

I just took mine off today for the first time and was horrified to see how much oil deposits were in it. The hole from the inlet manifold which should be about the size if a 2 pence piece was almaost blocked Shocked so i gave the whole thing a clean and a de gunk and put it all back. will see how she goes this afternoon on my way to work.

Hello Unc
Dont know yet as I used the garage that services the company I used to work fors company cars, so they havnt made up a bill as yet I am expecting around the 350 pound mark to be honest as he said the belt set was 60 quid and the filter pack oil air and diesel was 40 plus labour and other sundries but I will post it as soon as I get it, Its made the Paj even smother than before I,m really starting to like the motor now, but on reflection I still think a 2.8 would have been a better choice as its not all dependant on an rubber band hanging together.
One other point whilst I was waxoyling it today I took the under trays off and found a canister like object on the cross member with what I think is the other side of the vacuum line going to it does any body know what it is?
Stick with it it does get better.

Finally had the time (and energy!) to work on the EGR... Had the two front bolts out (working on a 2.5TD!)... that released the original metal gasket (See photo 1)... it was full of s**t!... cleaned it.... drew its outline and holes on a paper... cut my blocking metal sheet (Pepsi not beer Embarassed )... it got dark, and I couldn't undo the BOTTOM bolt(s)!!! There is a pipe there (I think goes to the exhaust!) ... pointed at with the RED arrow in the photo below...

What's the easiest way (on a 2.5TD model!) to release the EGR valve from that pipe without removing other bits and pieces Question

Trig, you don't need to undo the the two bolts underneath. You can move the valve about enough while it is attached to the exhaust inlet pipe to get your blanking plate into place between the valve and the inlet manifold. If you do want to get the egr valve off completely you'll need a good spanner to get at the two bolts as there isn't space for a socket wrench. The good news is if it's like mine after a few turns you can loosen the bolts with your fingers. I would recommend blocking the inlet to the EGR valve as as I found that if the outlet is blocked then at high revs the valve vents exhaust to the air, spreading soot around your engine bay.... Confused
