Just a 'by the by' , filled up at morrisons with cheaper diesel and my Paj didn't much care for it-lumpier starting , where it hadn't before.Got protec now and am using it tomorrow.Just wondering if anyone else had noticed performance variation with different fuels?

Don't ask Mad

The short answer is yes.

Many people say it doesn't make a difference but it does.

If you run through 2 full tanks you will get better performance and therefore better economy. The problems is you will like having more power and use it more and your economy will suffer.

So you end up thinking its cost you more.

If you can put the good stuff in and drive normally you will save more even though you are putting less fuel in, it makes a big enough difference to the economy.

Anybody who drives a petrol should try a couple of tanks of BP Ultimate, take the earth lead off the battery for 15 minutes soon after you've filled up first time, the difference is HUGE.

About 20bhp more and 3-5 mpg.

What is the purpose of removing the earth lead ? is it to reset the Ecu?

Yes, sorry.

If you put cheap fuel in, you get preignition (knocking) and the ecu retards the ignition, when you put the good stuff in slowly advances the ignition until it knocks again, running at optimum for the perol used.

This can take a few hundred miles and don't feel that much difference because its so gradual.

If you take the earth lead off it resets the ECU and goes straight to knocking with the good fuel and runs a lot better.

Its not a knocking you will hear by the way, it happens on probably half a dozen firing strokes only and that does take long even at tick over.

I've noticed a difference in a fuel change too. I used to use Shell, but the garage closed for a rebuild and so I use Total. I have noticed a less responsive engine with slightly more smoke, but the economy has increased a lot, whereas I was using 27 quid a week, I'm down to 20 quid for the same miles. Now, that might be due to the fact that the Paj won't perform on Total diesel so I stopped trying and drove like a Sunday driver, who knows. Question
