|
|
Hi.
I'm driving a 2.8 SWB Auto and recently I had great difficulty taking my foot off the brake whilst negotiating some steep hills (Langdale Quest)
With the auto you don't get the same engine breaking effect so what is the best recommendations?
Obviously I'm in 4L in first.
Cheers, |

Try 4Ll and centre lock ...then take your foot off the brake ...and trust the Truck |

i were at langdale and i went down that hill and believe me you wouldn't take yer foot off the brake
when i went down i found that not touching the brakes was just too fast especially with the take off ramps half way down and the potholes bouncing you all over the place (the hill was about the length of nicks road...and bloody steep) so the way i did it was to use the brakes but at the same time apply the throttle a bit just to keep the wheels from locking up, this way means you can slow down in control
oh and in the afternoon we did the same hill again....in the snow |

i agree that it seems a bit odd braking when decending a hill etc. when off road. it seems to break (no pun intended) all the rules.
however, i find that allowing the truck to make its own way downhill under power is indeed a little fast for some situations. i too brake gently, avoiding any lockup. this way the vehicle is still under control. i am prepared though, to release the brake entirely if any sliding occurrs.

Too right Roger.
I was at Langdale a couple of weeks before you and the hills were bad enough then. The snow would be require an additional adrenalin burst.
If I started sliding half way down I honestly don't know if I could bring myself to let go of the brake though! Tough call. |

i did try to let go of the brake pedal but when i passed 15mph on the speedo i decided it was a bad move...especially when there is a take off ramp halfway down i slowed the car down (sort of) and used the above method after that |
