|
|
Changed the oil yesterday in my V6 Shogun and used a 10-40 mineral oil as recommended on here. Started it up and it sounded awful - lots of tapping and rattling from the top end. Took it for a run to see if it would quieten down but it didn't. So I dropped the new oil and used Halfords 10-40 semi-synth (which I used last time) and it still sounds the same. Put some Wynne's Valvetrain Addititve in to see if that would help but the tappets are still noisy.
So should I drop the oil again and put a different grade oil in or do I have a more serious problem requiring attention? I will be doing a few hundred miles in it next week so need it to be right.
Thanks in advance,
Steve |

Just changed it - was advised against flushing it in case it caused leaks? |

for multivalve petrol engines, if the hla's are hydraulic, 5/40 oil may be better. this is because there is a small hole for oil to get thru, thinner the oil, the more effective. some prefer mobile 1, as its very thin and can be very effective in reducing hla rattle.

Really? My non-mechanical logic was telling me to put a thicker oil in, not thinner!!!
more x 4 - is protec flush readily available? And any particular booster I should use? |

Need to get it sorted today really, or tomorrow at the latest ready for a long journey on Monday. Can I get Protec at Halfords/local motor shops or is it mail order only? |

Same thing happened to me. Just leave it until the next oil change, the engine won't be harmed in any way. The extra rattling just shows that the oil is working and getting to every part! When you use thicker oil that quietens the tappets etc, it isn't actually working better, arguably it is worse. |

Been tinkering around a bit more today and have noticed that the rattling/tapping comes and goes. Went out in it this morning sounding like a bag of bolts (cold and hot engine) but then went out in it this afternoon and it was quiet again so I thought it was OK. Just been out in it again and its back noisy again |

Further to my woes of last weekend, just thought I'd let you know that I drove from Hull to Great Yarmouth on Monday (190 miles) with no problems. Drove approx 100 miles around the Great Yarmouth area on Tues/Weds/Thurs, then set off back home on Friday morning.
Around 50 miles into my return journey I noticed the temp gauge was a little higher than normal and was slowly rising. I stopped at a service area expecting to find a water leak, but there was none - the radiator was full so I let the engine cool down and set off again. The temp got back to normal and stayed there for a while but then gradually started to rise again. I continued at slow speed (40-50 mph) until the needle got to the top of the "normal" area on the gauge, then pulled over again and let it cool. This process was repeated a couple of times until I could get to a safe place (I had my wife, 2 young children and a dog in the car with me). I then called the AA out who did various checks and diagnosed a blown head gasket
So my questions now are -
1. How much should I expect to shell out to have this repaired?
2. Is it a main dealer only sort of job or should I be OK taking it to a smaller (cheaper) garage?
3. If the heads are coming off, what else would I be wise to have done at the same time?
4. Is it my fault for driving it when it clearly wasn't running right?
Finally, apologies to anyone stuck behind me on the A47/A17/A15 on Friday |
