You dont state what engine you have? Shocked

If its a 2.5 it may have slipped a tooth on the timing belt.

On any engine it may be a broken rocker. U will have to take the cover off to have a look tough.

Reply with engine and others will add more help I'm sure.

Good luck with it. Wink

I have had this too, delay in power when accelerating, puffs of black smoke and a 'prominent' knocking/pinking noise, then pulls away fine.

It originally started when I unplugged the battery and wiped the Memory.

Anyway, got the garage to look at her whilst doing a service.

So changed all the filters, all the belts (ouch!), new tension arm bearing, new water pump.

Anyway, picked her up today after 2days in Garage. The pinking/noise has cured a lot, but is still noticable.

Mechanic, who I trust more than the average, has informed me that the engine is getting to much fuel, which causes the pinking and black puffs.

Any aftethoughts on this from you guys????

I was wondering, if I was to unplug the battery again and wipe the memory, will this might clear the remainder of the picking noise or will something else be required? ie timing readjusted (or is this std with the timing belt change?), fuel pump, or even the egr valve?

as with everything,if the smoke is black,it's overfueling. there are a whole host of reasons this happens, simple stuff like a blocked airfilter to more involved things like timing being out. the only way to cure it properly is to take it to a garage with a rolling road and have it set up on a dyno. if you don't do that,it will never be perfect, maybe just near enough Wink

When I bought my challenger 2.8, it would occasionally do the exact symptoms you describe - pinking + smoking. Have you cleaned/ blocked the egr valve? As this valve links the inlet manifold via the valve to the exhaust manifold, we found on this car that it was loosing the boost pressure from the turbo. after checking we found that once the turbo was 'boosting' the egr valve was leaking most of the boost straight down the exhaust, thus, the pump was providing the fuel required, but the extra air (turbo boost) needed was'nt being provided, hence the overfuelling (pinking) and smoke. We blocked off the valve with a blanking plate and cured the problem. If you've already blocked it off just check the plate has'nt burnt through, worth a look???

I have replaced ALL the filters, replaced ALL the belts, including timing and balance shaft. Not doing it as much now, but still doing it.

James is there any chance you could tell me or send me pics so as I can look to see if my egr is blanked or not as I have no idea what to look for or where and wouldnt know wether its been plated off or not.

Cheers Guys.
