Don't know what your interests are,
but there's the Mint Cake factory in the centre of Kendal
For peace and quiet, try Ambleside and Ullswater
Most things for the shopper are around Windemere |

Alan,
You could try around the Coniston area, if you're into walking then a good walk is up the "Old Man of Coniston".
Windemere is mainly for the tourists, so you get the usual shops etc, although there are a few good outdoors shops etc. Also there is a very nice Slate Gallery called Kirkstone Galleries near there and they do some very nice slate stuff.
If you want to scare the S*** out of your fellow passengers then I can recommend going up to Wrynose pass and Hard Knott Pass - just becareful there is a huge drop on the one side and no safety rails etc
Ambleside is very nice as well, and the House that is built on a bridge is worth a quick visit, also Upper Sawrey (SP) is the place where Beatrix Potters' House is and there is a museum etc there.
Grizedale forest is good for a few walks as is Scafell - although to be honest the whole of the lakes is a stunning area and great for photography and walking alike.
There are a few quiter places towards the north of the region, but this is also where the area becomes a bit more hilly.
Hope this helps, and I hope you all have a great time, I know I miss my yearly camping trips to the Lakes........Hmmmm time to go back I think 8) 8)
Cheers
