Amateur Radio help for those who wish to take part on line.
Foundation licence
Intermediate License
Advanced License
I will try to make this as easy as possible, maybe with the help of other Radio Amateurs who are members; we can help those who wish to become radio amateurs get through the foundation licence exam.
You could start here with a little light reading, as you work through you’ll see a Sample test paper, yes I know that the answers are at the bottom, but if you can manage not to use them, treat this as a test paper, you could mark it yourself or send the answers to me in a pm.
Answers in the form of: 1c; 2b; 3d; and so on.
The Syllabus: http://www.rsgb.org/tutors/foundation/pdf/syllabus.pdf
Guide to the Foundation syllabus (pdf).

Sample Foundation question paper (pdf)
http://www.rsgb.org/tutors/foundation/pdf/sample.pdf
Simplified band plans for use in Foundation only (pdf
http://www.rsgb.org/tutors/foundation/pdf/bandplans.pdf
You will need to purchase one of the many good books on sale, which the exams are based on; you’ll find that almost all of the questions will be based on these books.
Books like foundation license now, you can see from some of the questions, a lot is common sense questions, so as not to make it to hard to obtain your first license.

Here is the best way to find your local information on amateur clubs, training providers, exam centres .
The link shows you a regional map, click on your location, then choose an option, this will give you all your local info.

That’s it for now; let’s see if anybody is interested before we go too far. |

Good, just keep reading it cover to cover, as the exam is based on the books, you should find that all the answers are between them two covers some where.
Things like what the gold ring on a resister for.
What’s the speed of light?
How old must you be to hold a amateur license.
What freq is the 10meter band?
What is electricity?
And so on, have fun any questions please ask, but remember we passed many years ago, so now I have forgot more than I’ll ever know again, |

good idea Philip 8)
the foundation licence is a very non-tech and easy way into the hobby and yet gives access to some great communications networks as well as more straight forward "traditional" point to point transmission/reception.
we're fortunate enough in the north west to have a couple of the most active 2m repeaters in the country, particularly busy as folks go to and from work.
if anyone needs info or help to become a radio ham in North Wales, Wirral, Liverpool, Merseyside or North Cheshire just send me a pm and i'll gladly offer assistance.

Thanks Pete.
I had been reading some of the other posts, finding that members have got into CB radio which is good, I see some would like to go a little further, trying out group chats not knowing how limited the range of CB is.
Yaesu FT817 HF/VHF/UHF All Mode Transceiver
So hence the thought of helping who ever may be interested in becoming radio amateurs, thanks for helping out, but I do think it would be better to have an open forum on the help. Pm’s yes so long as the question and answer are put into the forum so everybody can see it, if that makes sense, maybe we can make topics i.e. License, theory, electrical, mathematical and so on, that is if anybody is interested, easy for them to look up in the forum, if questions and answers are categorised.
This is just ideas, maybe you can come up with some better ones, need to make it interesting or nobody will be interested, take amateur gear to meets so members can see it in operation, then they can see the type of coverage you can get with small hand held radios/mobiles. |

hi Phillip,
indeed, i agree and also hope more members here take a look.
the only reason for private messages is to pass on info re personal contacts and details of where and when to attend a local club so members can get on with passing the foundation test.
as you're no doubt aware different clubs have their own way of doing things. the personal preference as to whether a pocuk member would rather invest a weekend of their time to take a course/exam or attend one evening for a few weeks isn't going to add anything to this thread.
members can be assured the foundation course ain't rocket science. there's very little maths, theory, electrical, etc. the RSGB are offering an easy introduction to radio. their emphasis being on operating safely, not causing interference to other radio users and transmitting within allowed frequencies. you get a copy of the band plan with the question paper so lots of answers are given
clubs are regularly taking 9 year old boys and girls through the test. i know one local club has a 100% pass rate. |

Well done dulux.
Take it you are finding the reading quiet easy then, would be nice if you could let others know how easy you find the preparation work for the exam.
I see we have 146 views on the post, I think some of these must be interested, maybe we may get a few more.
Don’t forget we are here to help if we can, there are a few Amateurs as members, and I’m sure they’ll help.
My advice on Radio’s is keep reading all you can about the ones you fancy, as there is such a wide range to pick from, look at all the good point and bad points of each, you’ll find the aerial system is the most important, go for the best here that you can afford, and the biggest you can fit in, there’s just no substitute for a big B****R.
Good work keep us posted. |
