you have an oddball engine then m8, the egr valves gunge up and throw muck into the intake. blanking the egr stops this happening.
also my fuel economy altered by less than 1/2 mpg. if you got 5mpg difference theres something seriously wrong with your engine |

...Or how you've fitted it, did you buy a kit ? and how have you fitted it as the 4m40 is the easiest one to do and probably the one that gets the best results. |

Cleaned egr, turbo inter cooler and all air pipes. Also cleaned rocker cover filter (crank case breather), put on cybox exhaust and k&n air filter. Response/performance much better, a little less smoke. I read that turbos through back some oil into air system as does crankcase pressure (when rocker cover filer is blocked). Next step is diesel pump calibration and use better quite diesel from Bp. |

I decided to blank off my EGR but then thought about it and decided to remove it completely and blank off the intake and exhaust connections to it. I got the kit to do it from ebay for £9 which was nice. In doing so I discovered that a previous owner had fitted a thin bit of tin between the EGR and the intake manifold which was starting to corrode a bit so I was glad I did. Because they hadn't blocked off the exhaust side or the vacuum line it meant that on part throttle I got weird exhaust noises and I think I wasn't getting all the exhaust going to the turbocharger so I wasn't getting all the part throttle response I should. After removing the valve and blanking the holes with 6mm plate steel and the vacuum line with a proper vacuum cap I took mine for a quick test drive, part throttle response has improved and it's quieter. I really like the way the Pajero responds positively to a bit of careful maintenance. |

Well the EGR has its use, cause it reduces emission.
Those old school diesels would never pass any emission test without an EGR
so car manufacturers add that EGR to make the engines more "green"
You will find similar systems on petrol engines, I referre here to BMW aircooled Boxer engines (motorcycle)
BMW calls it SLS (secondary luft / air system)
same principle same effect
I removed in the past all of those systems and always gained more power and better fuel economy.
Why?
The hot gas from the exhaust is turned back into the cylinder head inlet.
This is counter productive!
Hot air / gas intake does drop the performance dramatic, cause hot air cant bind as much fuel as cold air
(this is why an intercooler gives you more power! Intercooler cools down the hot air from the inlet and the cold air can bind more fuel)
those are simple physical facts no one can deny.
btw;
to clean with carbon mocked up exhaust and other parts the best stuff to clean is using oven cleaner spray
(that one mom used to clean the baking oven)
spray it on, wrap the part in plastic bag and give it a rest for a night
wash of with high pressure cleaner carefully and your parts will look like new |

I really like the way that 'offending items' can be removed and thrown over ones shoulder into the depths of the garage! Never owned a vehicle that so much can be removed from while still working (often working better) |

Sounds like a 2.5 to me, you should see mine
The ball bearing is a method of blocking the vacuum hose associated with egr. Other favourite are a golf tee, and on my truck it was a nail shoved down the pipe. Mine also had a flimsy Coke can job instead of real blanking plate. I replaced it immediately with a proper blanking kit, only a few quid and well worth it.
Now my truck is just low powered and smoky |

Read lots on this forum about EGR valve.
Mine is a 2.8 1995 with 228k kilometres (over 142k miles) original speedo from Japan.
Live in France so left speedo in Kms !
Have owned it 12 years from 45k kms - so I have done over 180k kms.
Had never touched the infamous EGR valve.
After reading on this forum - decided to remove it for cleaning.
To my surprise - it was almost spotless !
Quick clean with petrol & a toothbrush & back on inside 30 minutes.
Is this normal ? |

Mine's the same model and year and has still got it's EGR.
I take it off and clean it every year - but it is never very dirty. |
