|
|
Managed to fit factory roof rails to my SWB today. Took 4 hours from start to test drive.
this is roughly how to do it.....
Start by stripping the fitting from the upper interior ( interior lights, grab handles, interior mirror , sun visors)
Carefully remove the upper plastic trim. The front (side of windscreen and over the doors pull off easily, there are a few plastic clips on the drivers side where a grab handle could be fitted. )
the rear plastic trims come off after unbolting the front and rear seat belts and the plastics clips from the edge of the trim next to the rear boot door)
The headlining is held up by several plastic clips over the rear boot area and down the sides. Take care as you lower the head lining as it may be stuck to the windscreen, i had to leave the head lining in as it was stuck so i rested it on the front seats
The roof bars have 5 bolts
tip :- make sure you clean the theads and wind them into the bars rather than trying to thread them into the bars from inside the car
pull up and remove the plastic gutter trim ( it just pulls up after you unscrew the curved ends from above the boot.
you will see the dimples in the gutter, line up the roof bars with the dimples in the gutter recess ( there are dimple and spot welds so take your time and you will find the 5 threads will line up with 5 dimples
the dimples will line up with recess inside the car ( the big bolt hole is the rear seat belt mounting
get an 8mm hss drill bit and carefully drill the 5 holes ( if on the drives side dont hit the wires for the interior light
attempt to fit the roof bar now, if the holes dont quite line up dont panic! I had to enlarge 2 of them to 10mm.
Clean up all the swarf and paint the new holes with anti rust paint or waxoil etc
You need to carefully cut the gutter trim to fit between the mounting feet of the roof bars, i found a high speed mini disk in my dremmel made light work!
fit the rubber feet to the base of the bars
Put a lot of silicon or windscreen sealer round the feet of the roof bars and carefully slide the bars down onto the roof
carefully bolt the bars down from inside the car
check the gutter trims and rubber feet are ok during the tighten down
leave for a few hours for the silicon or windscreen sealer to dry and hose the car down for a few mins to check for leaks round the feet.
refit the headlining and interior parts! |

May just bolt mine to the roof to keep a lower profile then The roof is tough enough for that too and the roof rack i have i can move the mounts about so it will fit where i want it too |

tread carefully , the mounts are under the gutter trim, and closer to the center of the roof and it's just thin tin!
get some genuine rails and fit em its much safer to do like i did.
i have a close shave with a roof rack coming loose and was not good!
Hey colin, picked up some thule aero bars and a thule pacific 470 litre box yesterday will post a pic
with 2 boarder terriers, a siberian huskey and a prog there is not much room in a shortie! |

Make sure you get a set with all of the fixings! I didn't check and they arrived with 4 of the studs missing and 9 of the 10 nuts missing.
So I'm going to have to get creative! Bought 1m of M8 stud and a box of nuts- will report back! |

if you pull the strip off the roof out you will see the drill holes you need to drill out and then drop the head lineing down and bolt up the bars to the roof with sealing in between |
