no2 the plates you are having done need to be made out of STEEL ali is not suitable as the heat on the centre will burn it through the original is not open to the same heat or to put it another way think of paper gaskets they are ok while in the steel sandwich but if left loose the gases burn straight through

cripes, I hope the ally EGR housing and the ally inlet manifold don't melt at the same time |

Just to let you know that the plates will be made out of 0.8mm thick mild steel.
I had originally planned to make them from Ally, but as TrevMC pointed out, this could deform or even melt due to the high temperatures being passed through the valve. (ally sheet is rolled and therefore very soft in it's raw state)
The valve itself, although made of ally, will not melt due to the fact that it is cast and therefore is much, much harder in property as well as more substantial in build.
TrevMC also stated that stainless would be the best material - while this would be ideal as a gasket, to sandwich it between two items of ally would be detrimental because stainless and ally react badly when mated together, and I would not want to be held responsible for the premature corrosion of your EGR valve or more importantly the manifold!!
Before you say that the mild steel will rust - please bear in mind that it will be protected in a nice hot stranglehold and only minimal surafce area will be exposed to the air - which is 95% warm/hot & dry anyway!
I hope this addresses some of the concerns raised - and I assure you that I'm putting a lot of time & effort into making sure this 'little slip of metal' is as good as it can be!!
I have not long picked up the 'prototype' mild steel one and will be fitting it this weekend. If all goes OK then I'll be placing a large order from the engineering company - details of how to purchase etc. will be posted once the order has been placed.
Please hang in there!
Regards,
Bruce. |

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Bruce, and the obvious demand, we have taken stock of a couple of hundred precision cut 0.8mm zinc coated mild steel plates.
They will be available in the club shop (link at the top of the page) this weekend.
The total cost will be £5.00 - this includes the cost of the plate, online transaction processing charges, p&p and a little bit for the club pot
Again, a big thank you to Bruce!
Simon. |

Sorry I've not updated for a while, I've been ill & also thought it best for Simon to explain the purchase details 8) (at least I'm not having to worry about cashing cheques and posting them out now!! Thanks Simon!! )
I've attached a picture of the finished plate to show you what it's like. As mentioned, they have been Zinc coated to give a nicer and more original finish (and obviously to prevent them rusting in your nice shiny motors!! )
Thanks for all the feedback given about different materials etc.... I'm glad that the club will benefit from this in the end. 8)
Regards,
Bruce. |
